Gelete Burka (also Gelete Burka Bati ; born February 15, 1986 in Kofele , Arsi Province ) is an Ethiopian middle and long distance runner .

Life

She made her first international appearance at the junior women’s race at the 2003 World Cross Country Championships , where she won bronze. The following year she became Ethiopian champion in the 1,500 meter run and missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Athens over this distance by just two tenths of a second.

In 2005 she won the junior women's race at the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier , became national champion over 1500 and 5000 meters and set a national junior record over 3000 meters with 8: 39.90 minutes . At the World Championships in Helsinki she was eighth over 1500 meters and second in the world athletics final over 3000 meters.

At the 2006 World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka , she won the last short course. The following year she was fourth at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa and won over 1500 meters gold at the Pan-African Games . At the World Championships in Osaka , however, she was only tenth over 5000 meters.

In 2008 she won gold over 1500 meters at the World Indoor Championships in 2008 with the African record of 3: 59.75 minutes, was sixth at the World Cross Country Championships and won over 1500 meters at the African Championships in Addis Ababa . At the Olympic Games in Beijing , however, she was eliminated over 1500 meters in the lead.

In 2009 she was eighth at the World Cross Country Championships in Amman and tenth over 1500 meters at the World Championships in Berlin . The following year she won bronze in the 1500 meter bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Doha and silver at the African Championships in Nairobi . In 2011 she was eliminated over this distance at the World Championships in Daegu in the preliminary stages, and in 2012 she won bronze over 3000 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul . At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , she finished fifth in the final of the 5000 meter course in 15: 10.66 minutes.

In 2013, Burka won the 5-kilometer Carlsbad 5000 road race . After she mainly competed in track runs over 3000 and 5000 meters in the summer, she made her debut on the marathon distance at the Frankfurt Marathon. There she finished 12th in 2:30:40 h. In 2014, she climbed to 2:26:03 h in the Houston Marathon , finishing third. She also finished third in the Bogotá half marathon in 1:15:38 h. She finished the season in seventh place in the Chicago Marathon in 2:34:17 h.

In 2015, Burka increasingly focused on track racing again. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , she won the silver medal in the 10,000-meter run just behind Kenyan Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot . Over the same distance she finished third at the Africa Games in Brazzaville . In 2016 she qualified for her third Olympic Games. In the 10,000 meter run final in Rio de Janeiro , she only reached 8th place despite a personal best of 30: 26.66 minutes.

In 2017, Burka competed again in both track and road races. She achieved notable results with her victories in the 10,000 meter run at the FBK Games in Hengelo and at the San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid. In 2018, she increased her personal best at the Dubai Marathon to 2:20:45 hours and thus finished 6th. In the same year she celebrated her first victory on the marathon distance in Ottawa . She also won the Valencia half marathon in 1:06:11 h.

Burka achieved her most significant success in road running to date in April 2019 when she won the Paris Marathon in 2:22:47 h.

The 1.60 m tall burqa, who lives in Addis Ababa, weighed in at a competition weight of 43 kg in 2012. Her trainer is Tolossa Kotu, her manager Jos Hermens . She played soccer at school before she discovered running.
