Jos Hermens (actually: Josephus Maria Melchior Hermens ; born January 8, 1950 in Nijmegen ) is a former Dutch long-distance runner who is now a manager of track and field athletes .

Career as a track and field athlete

Jos Hermens successful career as a track and field athlete began nationally with youth records over 1500 meters obstacle and 3000 meters. With fourth place over 3000 meters at the Junior European Championships in Leipzig in 1968 , he also showed himself internationally. In 1972 Hermens became Dutch champion in cross-country skiing . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he was a candidate for a medal in the 5000-meter run . After the Olympic assassination , he was one of the few athletes who left early, for which Ankie Spitzer , wife of the murdered André Spitzer , thanked the European Championships in Munich in 2002 30 years later .

At the 1974 European Championships in Rome , Hermens was fourth in the 5000 meter run . In 1975 he was again national cross champion. In the same year he set a world record with an hourly run of 20,907 meters. The year 1976 began again by winning the national cross-country championships. This was followed by another world record in the hour run (20,944 meters) and a 10th place at the Olympic Games in Montreal over 10,000 meters . In 1977 and 1978 Hermens was again Dutch cross champion.

In addition to this track record, there are also numerous titles on the track.

Hermen's world record in the hour run lasted until 1991, when Arturo Barrios from Mexico outbid him by 157 meters. However, the former world record in the hour run is still the Dutch record.

Hermens ended his career in 1978 due to injury. Because of his susceptibility to injuries, he had already stopped participating in obstacle courses early on. His training was very extensive with long tempo runs on the road and on the track.

Career as a manager

After his career ended, Hermens worked as a representative for the sporting goods manufacturer Nike . In 1985 the Olympic champion Carlos Lopes approached Hermens and asked him to ask about starting opportunities. As other athletes heard this, Hermens soon had a group of athletes to look after.

Today he runs the company Global Sports Communications . His athletes included Haile Gebrselassie , Kenenisa Bekele , Irina Priwalowa , Amewu Mensah , who were banned for doping , Katrin Krabbe , Grit Breuer , Nils Schumann , Stephanie Graf , Süreyya Ayhan , Michelle Collins and Maurren Higa Maggi . Hermens Gage amounts to around 10% to 15% of the entry and prize money of its athletes. He is known for the fact that he does not burn his athletes as frequent starters , but rather carefully measures their starts .

After evaluating materials from the trial against trainer Thomas Springstein , convicted in February 2006 of doping minors, Hermens is suspected of being a central figure because of his contacts with the Spanish doping doctor Miguel Peraita (the bills for treatments were made out to Hermens' name and company) to be an internationally operating doping fraud network. Hermens denies this.
