5000 meter run
The 5000-meter run is a running discipline in athletics - the shortest distance of three Olympic long-distance disciplines . There are twelve and a half laps to run in the stadium, with the start at the 200 meter point of the stadium lap, i.e. before the curve to the home straight. In addition to the usual competitions in the athletics stadium, distance races are also held as road races.
The world record holder for women is the Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba , who ran 14: 11.15 minutes in Oslo in 2008 . The Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei has held the men's world record since August 14, 2020 with a time of 12: 35.36 minutes. The fastest men achieve times under 13:00 minutes, which corresponds to about 6.41 m / s or 23.08 km / h. The fastest women achieve times of 14:30 minutes, which corresponds to 5.74 m / s or 20.68 km / h.
The best European on this route is the Belgian Mohammed Mourhit with a time from 2000 of 12: 49.70 min. The European record for women has been held by the Dutch woman Sifan Hassan since 2019 with 14: 22.12 minutes.
Konstanze Klosterhalfen (August 3, 2019 in Berlin) and Dieter Baumann hold the German record with 14: 26.76 minutes (August 13, 1997 in Zurich). Austria's record holders on this route are Susanne Pumper (15: 10.54 min) and Günther Weidlinger (13: 13.44 min). The Swiss long-distance runners Anita Weyermann (14: 59.28 min) and Markus Ryffel (13: 07.54 min) hold their country's national records.
At the Olympic Games , the 5000-meter run has been in the program for men since 1912 , and for women only since 1996 .
The 5000 meters are also part of the German championships , but were previously held separately from the main event as part of the German championships in the 10,000 meter run .
history
Long-distance runs that are comparable to the 5000-meter run already existed at the ancient Olympic Games , in which 20 stadiums (3845 meters) or 24 stadiums (4616 meters) had to be run. The Greek name for this run is Dolichos .
In modern times, 3 miles (4828 meters) were run in English-speaking countries. At the Olympic Games, it took longer than any other discipline in athletics for the track to gain recognition. The first long-distance run was a 5-mile run (8047 meters) at the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games , which was also held at the 1908 Olympic Games . The men have run the 5000 meters and the 10,000 meters since 1912 .
In Germany, until the First World War, neither the 5000 nor the 10,000 meter run was widespread, instead the German Mile was run with a length of 7500 meters (last German record: 22: 43.2 min in 1939 by Max Syring ) . The 5000-meter run was part of the program of the German championships for the first time on 23/24. August 1919.
The first long distance women's races were held in Great Britain in 1953 over a length of 3000 meters. In 1983 the 3000 meter world championship course became Olympic in 1984 . For women, the 5000-meter course prevailed at the 1995 World Championships and at the 1996 Olympic Games, after the 10,000-meter run was recognized as a women's discipline eight years earlier.
The 5000-meter runs have been shaped by the training methods of the dominant runners since the 1920s: Paavo Nurmi ( Finland ) ran long distances twice a day, in winter on skis, supplemented by repetitive runs over short distances. The Swede Gunder Hägg invented the driving game ( fartlek ) in the 1940s , which consisted of cross-country runs at changing speeds and was also used in long-distance races. Emil Zátopek was successful with his interval method at the end of the 1940s / beginning of the 1950s. B. ran 60 times 400 meters. In the 1960s, endurance training began to take hold after Murray Halberg ( New Zealand ) surprisingly won the 5000-meter run at the 1960 Olympic Games .
