Werknesh Kidane (born November 21, 1981 in Tigray ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner .

Career

As a junior she made an international appearance. In 1998, she finished in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1998 in Marrakech third place in the race of juniors and sixth place at the World Junior Championships in Annecy in 5000 Meters . At the 1999 World Cross Country Championships in Belfast , she was junior world champion.

At the 1999 World Championships in Seville , it ran for the first time at a major international event in the adult sector. Over 5000 meters, however, she missed the finals. In 2000, she entered the junior women's race at the World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura , but could not build on her earlier successes and this time only finished ninth. At the Olympic Games in Sydney she reached seventh place over 5,000 meters.

At the World Indoor Championships in 2001 in Lisbon , she was ninth in the 3000 meter run and at the World Cross Country Championships in the same year fifth on the short distance. At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton , she started again in the 5,000-meter run, but again missed the finals.

In 2002 she won the silver medal on the short distance at the Cross Country World Championships in Dublin . She was able to repeat this success in Lausanne the following year . There she also won the gold medal in the long distance. She was able to round off the most successful season of her career so far at the World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis . There she won the silver medal behind her compatriot Berhane Adere in the 10,000 meter run with a personal best of 30: 07.15 min . At this point in time, Kidane finished fourth in the all-time best list over this distance. at the 2003 African Games in Abuja , she won the silver medal over 10,000 meters.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , she finished fourth in the 10,000 meter run. A few months earlier, she had finished third on the long distance and fourth on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Brussels . In 2005 in Saint-Galmier , she repeated her placement on the long distance and also won the silver medal in the short distance race. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she finished sixth over 10,000 meters. In the same year, she won the rock 'n' roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 1:09:48 h on her debut on the half marathon distance. After the season ended, she took a baby break.

In October 2008, she returned to competitive operations with a tenth place finish at the Great North Run . In 2009 she finished fourth in the Prague Half Marathon and in 2010 she won the Great Manchester Run . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , she was fourth over 10,000 meters.

Werknesh Kidane is 1.58 m tall and weighed in at a competition weight of 41 kg. She was supervised by Global Athletics & Marketing . She is married to the long-distance runner Gebregziabher Gebremariam (* 1984) and the mother of two sons.
