The men completed six long laps (11.998 km) on the long distance, the women on the long distance and the juniors two small and two large laps (7.974 km), the juniors three small laps (5.962 km), and the short distance runners of both sexes two small ones Laps (4.208 km).
Competitions
The junior women's race, the men's short-distance race and the women's long-distance race took place on March 23rd, and the other three races on the following day. A total of $ 560,000 in prize money was available for the adult competitions, of which the winners of each race received $ 30,000 and each winning team received $ 20,000.
In the men's category, last year's junior world champion Kenenisa Bekele made the double on the short and long distances for the first time. In the short-distance competition, the Ethiopian took the lead at the beginning of the second lap and won safely with a seven-second lead over Kenyan Luke Kipkosgei and his compatriot Hailu Mekonnen . The Australian Craig Mottram came in fifth, making him the best non-African runner like last year.
In the endurance race, Kenenisa Bekele sat down in the fourth lap together with the Tanzanian John Yuda Msuri , from the rest of the leading group, which included Richard Limo and Charles Waweru Kamathi, the reigning world champions over 5000 and 10,000 m. As on the day before, the Ethiopian took the lead at the beginning of the last lap and was six seconds ahead of Msuri until the finish. Bronze went to Kenyans Wilberforce Talel , 22 seconds behind, ahead of his compatriots Limo and Kamathi.
In the women's long distance, Paula Radcliffe managed to defend her title. In the absence of the Ethiopians Gete Wami and Derartu Tulu , who had been their toughest rivals in previous years, their most difficult competition surprisingly turned out to be the American Deena Drossin , who followed her until the start of the last round and was nine seconds behind silver won. The battle for the bronze medal was won by her compatriot Colleen De Reuck , completing the first podium without an African since 1993.
Radcliffe had decided not to start in the short distance race as she was preparing for her marathon debut. Halfway through the race, the three athletes who finished in the medals were in the lead: Edith Masai , bronze medal winner of the last event, won ahead of last year's fifth Werknesh Kidane and Isabella Ochichi . Cheered by her compatriots, Sonia O'Sullivan , who had become a mother for the second time just three months earlier, came seventh and led her team to win the bronze medal.
In the junior race, Gebregziabher Gebremariam won , who seven years later became world champion in the adult race, although he had lost a shoe at the start. Viola Jelagat Kibiwot was the first junior to defend her title.
