Richard Limo
Richard Limo (also: Richard Kipkemei Limo ; born November 18, 1980 in Cheptigit near Eldoret ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .
Career on the track and in cross-country running
Limo originally wanted to become an electrician and didn't start running until 1997, fascinated by the athletes at a training camp near his family's farm. In 1998 and 1999 he won silver in the junior races of the Cross Country World Championships . In 1998 he also won bronze in 13: 37.42 minutes in the 5000 meter run at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and silver in 8: 20.67 minutes in the 3000 meter obstacle course at the African Athletics Championships . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he finished tenth in the 5000 meter run in 13: 39.41 min. In this slow race with a quick final lap, he was only four seconds behind gold at the finish.
At the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, a much faster race developed from the start. At the beginning of the last corner, the Algerian Ali Saïdi-Sief was just ahead of Richard Limo in the lead, but Limo overtook him in the final sprint and won in 13: 00.77 minutes. Ali Saïdi-Sief was later stripped of his silver medal because of doping , so that in the official result list the Olympic champion of 2000, Million Wolde from Ethiopia, is in second place with 13: 03.47 min.
In 2002 and 2003, Richard Limo was fourth in the cross-country world championships on the long distance and won gold with the Kenyan team. At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis, Limo finished seventh in the fastest championship race over 5000 meters in 13: 01.13 minutes.
