Million Wolde  ( Amharic ሚሊዮን ወልዴ also Millon Wolde ; born March 17, 1979 in Addis Ababa ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner and Olympic champion .

biography

As a seventeen year old Wolde took part in the Junior World Championships in Sydney in 1996 and finished sixth in the 3000 meter obstacle course . A year later he was in Annecy Junior World Champion in the 5000-meter run . At the Junior World Championships in cross-country skiing , he finished eighth in Cape Town in 1996 , second in Turin in 1997 and first place in Marrakech in 1998 . In the same year he set his best time over 5000 m with 12: 59.39 min.

He finally moved into the limelight when he won the bronze medal in the 3000 meter run at the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi in early 1999 and came fourth on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Belfast. In the same year he was eighth over 5000 meters at the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville.

Wolde's career peaked at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when he was just 22 years old. In the 5000 meter race, nobody really wanted to take the lead and set a fast pace. Wolde ran his usual speed, took the lead 200 meters from the finish, left the competition behind and became Olympic champion in 13: 35.49 min.

At the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Wolde won the silver medal over 5000 meters in 13: 03.47 min. Since then he has not been able to achieve his usual level of performance due to various injuries.
