The 7th World Athletics Championships (officially: 7th IAAF World Championships in Athletics Seville 1999 ) took place from August 20 to 29, 1999 in the Spanish city of Seville . 1821 athletes from 201 countries took part.

overview

The competitions were held in the Olympic Stadium. The World Championships were held in Spain for the first time, seven years after the last major athletics event in that country, the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona .

Competitions

There were again changes in the competition offer for women:

  • Two new disciplines were on the program: the pole vault and the hammer throw .
  • In walking the route was extended from ten to twenty kilometers.
  • In the javelin throw , as with the men, a new spear was introduced with a forward shifted center of gravity.

For the women there were only a few deficits compared to the men's competitions.

Athletic performance

The seventh edition of the World Athletics Championships was also characterized by a high level of performance.

Most successful athlete

doping

The following seven doping cases occurred at these World Championships:

  • Innocent Asonze , Nigeria , 100 meters - eliminated in the preliminary run / 4 × 100 m - initially in third place. In June 1999, Asonze missed a doping test. As a result, his results from these world championships were revoked.
  • Davidson Ezinwa , Nigeria, 100 meters - eliminated in the semifinals. His sample of a doping test after the semifinals was positive, the protein hormone HCG was found. Thereupon he was excluded from further participation in these world championships - his assignment was intended as a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay, the result of which was ultimately revoked because of the disqualification of his compatriot Innocent Asonze.
  • Antonio Pettigrew , USA , 400 meters , initially fifth / 4 × 400 m - initially in first place. He confessed to having obtained doping drugs from Angel Heredia, a Mexican dealer, from 1997, including erythropoietin , also known as EPO, and growth hormone. As a result, he was stripped of some results, including his two results from these world championships.
  • Jerome Young , USA, 400 meters - initially fourth. He has a long history of doping, long after these World Championships. After several violations, including erythropoietin (EPO), numerous medals and results - including those from these world championships - were revoked in 2004 and a life ban was issued.
  • Mohamed Ibrahim Aden , Somalia , 1500 meters - eliminated in the semi-finals. He was convicted of taking ephedrine and disqualified.
  • German Skurygin , Russia , 50 km walk - first first. He was subsequently disqualified for using gonadotropins and banned for two years, and he had to return his gold medal.
  • Hannah Cooper , Liberia , 4 × 400 m - eliminated in the preliminary stages. The Liberian relay team was disqualified for drug abuse of their final runner Hannah Cooper.
