Oleksandr Bahach

Oleksandr Mykolajowytsch Bahatsch ( Ukrainian Олександр Миколайович Багач ., English transcription Oleksandr Bahach ; also Russian Александр Багач , Aleksandr Bagatsch / Aleksandr Bagach * 21st November 1966 in Matusiw , Cherkasy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Ukrainian shot putter who already his career began in the Soviet Union .

The second of the 1985 European Junior Championships in the shot put was 1989 champion of the Soviet Union. At the European Cup in 1989 he was disqualified for doping , which cost the Soviet men's team the qualification for the World Cup.

At the European Indoor Championships in Geneva in 1992 he was allowed to start again and won gold with 20.75 m. At the World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1993 he won bronze with 20.63 m behind the Americans Mike Stulce and Jim Doehring . After Bahatsch had finished sixth at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm in 1996 with 19.65 m, he won bronze at the Olympic Games in Atlanta with 20.75 m behind Randy Barnes and John Godina (both USA). At the World Indoor Championships in Paris in 1997 , he won silver with 20.94 m behind his compatriot Jurij Bilonoh . At the 1997 World Championships in Athens , Bahatsch won with 21.47 m ahead of Godina with 21.44 m. Five days later it was revealed that Bahatsch had tested positive for the stimulant ephedrine . Bahatsch had to return his medal and received a warning, Godina was world champion.

In 1998 Bahatsch finished 7th at the European Indoor Championships in Valencia with 19.89 m. In the open air at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest , Bahatsch won gold with 21.17 m. Bahatsch was also victorious in the 1999 World Indoor Championships in Maebashi with 21.41 m. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville , Bahatsch won bronze with 21.26 m behind Cottrell J. Hunter and Oliver-Sven Buder .

Bahatsch, who became Ukrainian champion in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999, made his last international start on February 27, 2000 at the European Indoor Championships in Ghent. After he had won confidently with 21.18, his doping test was positive and he was banned for life as a repeat offender. The Finn Timo Aaltonen with 20.62 m was subsequently declared the winner .

Oleksandr Bahatsch is 1.94 m tall and weighed 1354 kg at competition times.

He is married to Switlana, with whom he has two daughters: Oksana and Julija and a son Mykola , who is also a track and field athlete.
