Ulf Béla Timmermann (born November 1, 1962 in East Berlin ) is a former German athlete . In 1988 he was Olympic champion in the shot put for the GDR . Timmermann was involved in the GDR state doping program .
Life
Timmermann started for the Berlin TSC and was one of the world's best shot putters in the 1980s. Only the American Randy Barnes has so far also succeeded in pushing the ball over 23 meters, albeit with the twisting technique . Timmermann broke the world record several times in the course of his career. For the first time in 1985 with 22.62 m. Before the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he was the first person to hit the ball over 23 meters at 23.06 m on May 22, 1988. The big favorite for the gold medal was the flag bearer of the GDR delegation at the opening ceremony in Seoul and won the hoped-for Olympic victory days later.
Udo Beyer's big competitor in the GDR was GDR champion three times in a row between 1988 and 1990 and won his only all-German championship title in 1992 after reunification. He then also competed for Germany at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , but only finished fifth. He then ended his career. His 23.06 m is a European record to this day. The world record he had to give in 1990 to Randy Barnes with 23.12 m.
At the European Championships in 1986 he was second behind the Swiss Werner Günthör with 21.84 m . In 1990 he won with 21.31 m.
Ulf Timmermann was 1.95 m tall and had a competition weight of 118 kg. His planing technique was considered exemplary, series of images are still used for training today.
Timmermann completed an apprenticeship as a tax clerk, worked as an independent management consultant and is now the managing director of a large bakery. He is divorced and has two children.
Doping in the GDR
In 1991, anti-doping opponents Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke were able to secure dozens of dissertations and post-doctoral theses by former GDR doping researchers at the Bad Saarow Military Medical Academy . Based on the work, the state-organized doping practice of many well-known GDR competitive athletes, including Ulf Timmermann, was reconstructed. According to the information, Ulf Timmermann received very high doses of Oral-Turinabol from 1981 to 1984 . Timmermann has denied taking anabolic steroids . Secret GDR studies presented it as a prime example of the benefits of Oral-Turinabol.
