The GDR indoor athletics championships were held for the 23rd time in 1986 and took place from February 15 to 16 in the Senftenberger Sporthalle Aktivist , in which the champions were determined in 29 disciplines (16 men / 13 women).

Eight athletes ( Bringmann (60 m), Prenzler (200 m), Krippschock (5000 m), Pohland (60 m hurdles), Gauder (10 km walking), Pietz (stick), Timmermann (ball) and Voss (heptathlon)) to defend her title from the previous year, which three athletes ( Ludwigs (800 m), Bibernell (3000 m) and Oschkenat (60 m hurdles)) managed to achieve. With five titles, the SC DHfK Leipzig was the most successful team at the championships.

Heike Drechsler over 100 yards and Marita Koch in the 200-meter run ensured the sporting highlights with new indoor world records . The 21-year-old Steffen Bringmann equalized the indoor world best of Sören Schlegel (1981) and Thomas Schröder (1984) over 100 yards . In the 60-meter lead Brinkmann set a European best. The 20-year-old Ines Bibernell in the 3000 meter run, Dagmar Grimmenstein in the 5 km walk and Andreas Sam in the high jump ensured new GDR indoor best performances .
