GDR indoor athletics championships 1970
The GDR indoor athletics championships were held for the 7th time in 1970 and took place from February 14th to 15th in the Dynamo sports hall in the Hohenschönhausen sports forum in East Berlin , with the champions in 22 disciplines (13 men / 9 women) were determined. For the first time, the women’s 1500 meter run was on the program.
In the men's category, five athletes ( Hermann (1500 m), Nordwig (rod), Beer (wide), Drehmel (three) and Briesenick (ball)) managed to defend their title from the previous year, which in the women's category two athletes ( Balzer (55 m hurdles) and Schmidt (high)) succeeded. With five championship titles each, SC Motor Jena and ASK Vorwärts Potsdam were the most successful teams in these championships.
Karin Balzer provided the sporting climax with the new indoor world record of 7.5 s over 55 meter hurdles. Already in the run-up it equaled its old record with 7.6 s. Renate Meißner achieved new European indoor best performances in the 55-meter sprint and Hartmut Briesenick in the shot put. Klaus Beer jumped as the first GDR long jumper in the hall over eight meters and set a new GDR indoor record, which equaled Gerhard Dührkop with 2.14 m in the high jump .
