Renate Stecher , née Renate Meißner (born May 12, 1950 in Süptitz ), is a former athlete . In 1972 she was Olympic champion in the 100-meter run and 200-meter run and in 1976 in the 4-by-400-meter relay .

Sports career

Renate Stecher began active sports at Chemie Torgau. Then she went to Jena and started for SC Motor Jena . She was trained by Horst-Dieter Hille. In her active days, she was 1.70 m tall and weighed 70 kg.

She was one of the world's best sprinters in the 1970s . She became a three-time Olympic champion and five-time European champion. She was the first woman to run the 100 meters in under 11 seconds (hand-stopped); she made the distance in Ostrava on June 7, 1973 in 10.9 s. From 1970 to 1976 she ran a total of 17 world records.

In 2011 Renate Stecher was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports.

Private

Renate Stecher has been married to the hurdler Gerd Stecher since 1970. The couple has three daughters (born in 1977, 1979, 1986), some of whom are also very talented athletes; Daughter Anja (* 1979) was three-time Thuringian national champion in 1996 . After finishing her career, Renate Stecher studied sports science in Jena and then worked as a sports teacher in the university. This position was closed after the fall of the 1990s. Renate Stecher then worked as an employee in the student union and for the anti-doping commission of the DLV .
