Ewa Nikola Swoboda (born July 26, 1997 in Żory ) is a Polish sprinter who specializes in the 100-meter run . She has held the world record over 60 meters in the junior class since 2016.

Athletic career

Internationally, Ewa Swoboda took part in the World Youth Championships in Donetsk for the first time in 2013 and finished fourth there over 100 meters in 11.61 s. At the Junior World Championships in Eugene the following year, she again convinced over 100 meters and finished fifth in the final with 11.59 s. Over 200 meters and with the Polish 4 x 100 meter relay, however, she was eliminated in the preliminary round. Then she took part in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , but was disqualified there because of a false start. In 2015 she took part in the 60-meter run at the European Indoor Championships in Prague for the first time , where she set a new U20 European record with 7.20 seconds, finishing eighth. During the outdoor season, she won the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna in 11.52 seconds over 100 meters and won the silver medal in 45.28 seconds with the relay.

In the 2016 indoor season, Swoboda achieved a sensation at a competition in her home country. On February 12, she improved the seventeen-year-old U20 indoor record over 60 meters of Nigerian Joan Uduak Ekah to 7.07 seconds in Toruń . In June she received a starting place in the relay for the European Championships in Amsterdam , where she finished seventh in 43.24 s. Then she was one of the great hopes for a medal at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz , Austria. In the end, she only had to admit defeat over 100 meters to the outstanding Candace Hill in 11.12 s, who had set a new championship record. With the Polish relay Swoboda just missed another medal in 44.81 s as fourth. Thanks to her performance, Swoboda also qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she reached the semi-finals over 100 meters and was eliminated there with 11.18 s, while she was with the Polish relay with 44.33 s knocked out in advance .

In 2017 she originally won the bronze medal over 60 meters behind the British Asha Philip and Olessja Powch from Ukraine at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade 7.10 s . However, the Ukrainian was subsequently convicted of doping and Swoboda was awarded a silver medal. Then she won the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz in 11.42 s over 100 meters and reached fourth place in the relay in 44.21 s. Over 100 meters she took part in the World Championships in London for the first time and was eliminated there with 11.35 s in the semifinals . The following year she was eliminated at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham over 60 meters with 7.25 s in the semifinals, as well as in August at the European Championships in Berlin over 100 meters with 11.30 s. In addition, she took sixth place with the relay in 43.34 s. In 2019 she won the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 7.09 s over 60 meters, making her the first Polish woman to triumph over this distance. Then she did not reach the finish at the World Relays in Yokohama in the preliminary run and at the U23 European Championships in Gävle she successfully defended her title in the 100 meters in 11.15 s and won the bronze medal in 44.08 s with the relay. At the end of September she reached the semi-finals over 100 meters at the World Championships in Doha and was eliminated there with 11.27 s.

In the years from 2016 to 2019, Swoboda was Polish champion in the 100-meter run every year and in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019 also indoor champion over 60 meters.
