The 31st European Indoor Athletics Championships were held from March 4 to 6, 2011 in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy . It took place for the second time after 1994 in Paris and for the fifth time in France . Medals were awarded in 26 competitions.

Applications for the venue

In addition to Paris, Apeldoorn ( Netherlands ), Gothenburg ( Sweden ) and Leipzig ( Germany ) had expressed an interest in hosting the European Indoor Athletics Championships. While Paris finally prevailed, the last remaining contestant Gothenburg was awarded the contract for the 2013 European Athletics Indoor Championships .

Several international athletics competitions had already taken place in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in the past: the World Indoor Games in 1985 , the European Indoor Championships in 1994 and the World Indoor Championships in 1997 .

Attendees

With a total of 630 athletes, 346 men and 284 women, a new record was reached. Of the 50 national member associations of the European Athletic Association , all except Andorra , Liechtenstein , Luxembourg and Montenegro were represented by at least one participant.

The German Athletics Association reported 38 athletes, three of whom canceled their participation before the start of the competitions due to injuries. The Austrian Athletics Association sent a team of ten, Swiss Athletics nominated seven athletes.

Francis Obikwelu surprisingly won the final over favorites Dwain Chambers and Christophe Lemaitre. In the history of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, he became the oldest title winner in this discipline and the first Portuguese medalist in the sprint area.

The sporting highlight of the second day of the competition was Renaud Lavillenie's national indoor record, with which he also exceeded his best outdoor performance. Favorite Ralf Bartels took the lead in his second attempt with 20.80 m and never gave it up until the end. In the fourth attempt it increased to 21.16 m. He pushed four of his five valid attempts in the final further than any of his competitors. David Storl, who had beaten Bartels at the German championships the week before, ensured a German one-two. Marco Fortes (20.34 m) and Nedžad Mulabegović (20.05 m) had set national indoor records in qualifying. Mulabegović was able to improve significantly in the final.

Andrej Krautschanka won with a personal best from Nadir El Fassi, who moved up from fourth to second place in the final 1000 meter run. The former Olympic and world champion in the decathlon, Roman Šebrle, secured his 18th medal at international championships in third place. In the end he was only three points ahead of Eelco Sintnicolaas, who set a national record. Ingmar Vos achieved the best individual performances in the 60-meter run and in the 60-meter hurdles, Darius Draudvila in the long jump, Vasily Kharlamov in the shot put, El Fassi in the high jump and in the 1000-meter run and Sintnicolaas in the pole vault.

Caroline Nytra won the photo finish in front of Tiffany Ofili. Their lead was a thousandth of a second (7.793 to 7.794 s). Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida surprisingly won the gold medal in front of Austra Skujytė, who was in the lead after four disciplines. Although she was considered to be the better 800 meter runner of the two, she collapsed completely in the final discipline and fell back to second place. Nana Djimou Ida achieved the best individual performances in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump, Skujytė in the shot put, Remona Fransen in the high jump and Zuzana Hejnová in the 800-meter run.
