Roland Schwarzl (born December 10, 1980 in Lienz , East Tyrol ) is an Austrian athlete and decathlete .

Life

Schwarzl grew up in Oberdrauburg . In 1999 he won a bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in Riga . The following year he improved his best performance in the indoor heptathlon to 5734 points and qualified for the European Indoor Championships in Ghent, Belgium .

This was followed by several years with injuries before he exceeded the 8,000 point mark for the first time in 2004 at the Götzis all- around meeting . With 8064 points he qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he finished 10th with 8102 points.

At the European Indoor Championships in Madrid in 2005, he was the first Austrian all-rounder to win a bronze medal in the heptathlon, with a new Austrian record of 6064 points. In the same year he was able to qualify for his first World Championship in Helsinki , where he finished 15th.

After a break due to injuries, Schwarzl qualified for the 2009 World Cup in Berlin. There he had to end the decathlon after the second discipline due to a muscle injury.

In 2010 he improved the Austrian record he had held at the Austrian indoor championships by exactly one point to 6065 points. At the all-around meeting in Götzis he was able to surpass 8000 points for the third time in his career - with 8031 ​​points he qualified for his first European outdoor championships. In Barcelona he finished 14th.

In January 2016, Schwarzl became a special trainer for the area of ​​fitness and regeneration at the Austrian Athletics Association. After he had not completed any athletics-specific training since 2013, he switched to ATSV Ternitz for a comeback on a hobby level.
