Hengelo ( listen ? / I ) ( Lower Saxon : Hengel ) is a town in the Dutch province of Overijssel , in the Twente region , about 7 kilometers northwest of Enschede , about 10 kilometers southwest of Oldenzaal . The villages Beckum and Oele also belong to the community . Audio file / audio sample

history

Hengelo was a small farming village around 1800. In the 19th and first half of the 20th century industrial companies settled here, which led to Hengelo developing strongly. During the Second World War , the city was deliberately bombed by the Allies on October 6th and 7th, 1944 .

After the decision in the municipal council to have its own municipal coat of arms in 1868, the draft of the municipal architect was approved by a royal resolution on April 1, 1870.

The Hengelo station is located on the Almelo-Salzbergen railway and the railway line Zutphen-Glanerbeek . The main railway line runs Amsterdam - Deventer - Bad Bentheim - Rheine - Osnabrück - Berlin . From 2010 to 2013, Hengelo was connected to Bad Bentheim and Enschede via the Grensland Express . Since January 2018, Hengelo has again been served by German regional traffic with the RB61 ( Eurobahn ) from Bielefeld via Bad Bentheim. Hengelo is located on the A1 / Europastraße 30 and A35 motorways . The city also has a port on the Twentekanaal .

Hengelo is an important industrial city for the region.

Table salt is extracted in the vicinity , which Akzo Nobel processes industrially here . The large Stork machine factory has existed in Hengelo since 1859 . The former Demag compressor technology division at the Hengelo location was incorporated into Siemens' “Power” division in 2001 . A production site of the R. Stahl group of companies is also located in Hengelo, as is the Dutch subsidiary DELTA BLOC Nederland of the MABA Group . Thales Nederland is headquartered in Hengelo .

Hengelo is also the headquarters of the Huttenkloas brewery .

Public facilities

The amusement park De Waarbeek with the roller coaster Rodelbaan , a small lake for swimming, surfing, etc. is located in the Hengelo city area.

The FBK Games have been taking place in the Fanny Blankers Koen Stadium since 1981 , an internationally important athletics meeting named after the record runner Fanny Blankers Koen .
