Hengelo ( listen ? / I ) is a village in the municipality of Bronckhorst , Gelderland province , in the Netherlands . It has 8,115 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The village is dominated by agriculture and has some industry. It serves as a shopping center for the surrounding villages. Audio file / audio sample

The church from the 15th century is used by the Dutch Reformed Church .

A synagogue community existed in Hengelo until the Holocaust in the Netherlands . At the site of the former synagogue in Synagogestraat in the center of the village, a plaque with a Star of David and a shofar commemorates it.

Until the municipal reform on January 1, 2005, Hengelo was an independent municipality.
