Peter van Merksteijn senior (born June 10, 1956 in Hengelo ) is a Dutch circuit racing driver , rally driver and owner of Van Merksteijn Motorsport . In 2008 he won the LMP 2 classification at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and was runner-up in the same class behind his team-mate in the Le Mans Series . In the 2011 season he started in his team, together with his son Peter van Merksteijn jr. in a Citroën DS3 WRC each in individual races of the World Rally Championship.

Career

rally

Van Merksteijn came to rally sport in 1985. There he took part in various events of the Dutch rally championship until 1996 and in several rallies across Europe. In 1996 he temporarily gave up rallying and switched to circuit racing. When his son Peter van Merksteijn jr. In 2007 he began to take part in individual races of the World Rally Championship, he switched back to rallying and took part in the same events as his son. His greatest success so far in the World Rally Championship was 20th overall in the 2009 Rally Norway .

In 2009 he started in the X-Raid Team with a BMW X3 CC at the Dakar Rally . There he was eliminated in twelfth position, but on stage five because his vehicle caught fire.

Le Mans

In 2008 he started in preparation for the Le Mans 24-hour race in four of the five races of this championship. Van Merksteijn Motorsport founded an LMP2 team especially for this purpose and started with a Porsche RS Spyder , with which he won the team championship. He won three runs with his team-mate Jos Verstappen and once he finished second. In the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , Merjsteijn decided to start in the Rally Germany of the World Rally Championship, which was taking place at the same time, and was replaced by Jeroen Bleekemolen . His team also finished this run as class winners. Therefore, he took second place in the LMP2 drivers' championship behind his team-mate Verstappen.

In the same year, Peter van Merksteijn won the LMP2 classification of the Le Mans 24-hour race with Bleekemolen and Verstappen, two laps ahead of the Essex team, which also started with a Porsche RS Spyder.
