The 76th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 76 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , including 24 Heures Du Mans, Le Mans , was from 14 to 15 June 2008, the Circuit des 24 Heures instead of.

The race

In 2008 the number of participants in the LMP1 class increased significantly. In addition to Audi and its team, Joest Racing , which had already reported three prototypes at Le Mans in recent years, this time Peugeot was also represented with three vehicles at Le Mans. In addition to the two 01s by Henri Pescarolo, there were also new developments by Dome and Epsilon Euskadi .

The Dome S102 was the successor to the open Dome S101 and was co-developed by employees of the University of Tokyo . Epsilon, the team of Juan Barazi and Michael Vergers , which had previously been active in the LMP2 class, entered the LMP1 class in 2008 under the direction of Joan Villadelprat with the Epsilon Euskadi ee1 . The ee1 was designed by John Travis . In the first drafts, the double roll bar was still present, as was required for open sports prototypes such as the Audi R10 TDI . Since the ACO , which organizes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, aimed to only allow closed prototypes from 2010, the design was changed and the vehicle was given a roof. Another change was the introduction of a high nose, as is common with formula vehicles. The ee1 was equipped with a Judd GV5.5 S2 engine in the 2008 racing season . When choosing tires, they relied on Michelin .

In practice, Stéphane Sarrazin drove a time of 3: 18.513 minutes in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP . This time corresponded to an average speed of 247.160 km / h. Since the late 1980s - in 1988 Hans-Joachim Stuck in the Porsche 962C (3.15.640 = 250.164 km / h) and 1989 Jean-Louis Schlesser in the Sauber C9 (3.15.040 = 249.826 km / h) - nobody had the Circuit des 24 heures under 3 minutes 20 lapsed. In contrast to the previous year, this time the Peugeot's were not only able to keep up with the speed of the Audi R10 TDI , but were also superior on a dry track. However, all Peugeot's were in the race with a dry set-up. The Audi with the number 2 took the lead during the rainy night. In some cases, this vehicle was up to ten seconds per lap faster than the competition. In the end, the lead gained was enough for victory. Record winner Tom Kristensen won for the eighth time. Van Merksteijn Motorsport won the LMP2 class in the Porsche RS Spyder . Aston Martin Racing won the GT1 class in the Aston Martin DBR9 . Risi Competizione secured the class win in the GT2 class in the Ferrari F430 .
