Stéphan Grégoire, in some publications also Stéphane Grégoire (born May 14, 1969 in Neufchâteau ), is a former French racing driver and entrepreneur.

Career

Monoposto

Stéphan Grégoire started his career in 1988 in the Formula Ford and rose a year later in the French Formula Renault Championship , where he on a Martini MK57 and Orion 89C behind Olivier Panis , Emmanuel Collard , Jean Lafond and Guillaume Gomez fifth in the Overall rating was. In 1990 he switched to the French Formula 3 championship , where he achieved the best final result in this series in 1992 when he was fifth overall.

In contrast to many of his colleagues in European motorsport, who saw their future in Formula 1 , Grégoire turned his back on his home continent in 1994 and became involved in US monoposto racing. In 1993 he made his debut at the 500-mile race in Indianapolis and finished the race after 15th place in the qualification as 19th in the final standings. 1994 he tried to go to the starting line for the second time in Indianapolis and was after the year a second time for a race in the CART series reported. In the race itself he missed the qualification.

After a year of standstill, Stéphan Grégoire moved to the Indy Racing League in 1996 . The series consisted of only three races. The Frenchman finished the season 13th overall, with an early retirement in Indianapolis . In the following two years he competed in the series for Chastain Motorsports and finished the 1997 and 1998 seasons in 11th and 12th place in the overall standings. In 1999 he moved to Dick Simon Racing , where he stayed for the next two years. In 2000 he had his best result in Indianapolis when he finished eighth overall in Juan Pablo Montoya's first Indy triumph. In the fall of that year he had a serious accident on the Texas Motor Speedway . He broke his left knee and ankle. Although the injuries had not completely healed, he returned in 2001 , but had to take a long hiatus on the advice of the doctors after an early failure in Indianapolis .

In 2002 he was unable to race at all and his monoposto career stalled. He did not return until 2006, but only contested the race in Indianapolis, which he had to give up after driving 49 laps due to handling problems. He made his last appearance in the monoposto in Indianapolis a year later when he had another serious accident during training and suffered a severe bruise on his back. A vortex had also broken out so that a race start was out of the question. The vacant place in the Chastain Motorsports team was taken by Roberto Moreno .

GT and sports cars

In the difficult years after the test accident in Texas, when he did not receive any offers from the Indy Racing League, he tried to gain a foothold in sports car racing. He received a contract with JMB Racing , a Monegasque team, the GT cars of Ferrari in the American Le Mans Series announced. In 2004 the engagement in the Gand-Am series began, in which he competed in races until 2008.

He competed four times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and once in the 12 Hours of Sebring . After finishing 15th in Le Mans in 2010 , he ended his career.

Entrepreneur

Stephan Gregoire is a founding member of Miles Ahead , a company that provides mini-model driver training at Indianapolis Motor Speedway .
