The Texas Motor Speedway is a race track in Fort Worth , Texas .

route

The route is designed as a so-called quad oval . The total length of the route is 1.5 miles (approximately 2400 m). Inside there is a street course with four different route lengths (from 0.5 miles to 2.3 miles). The pit lane offers space for 45 boxes (in the Sprint Cup ) or 35 boxes (in the IndyCar Series ) and is approx. 265 meters long. The racetrack offers space for 159,585 spectators and approx. 80,000 parking spaces. Via Interstate 35 and US Highway 114 and just a few miles north of the greater Dallas-Ft. Located in Worth, the Texas Motor Speedway is very easy to reach.

history

In late November 1994, NASCAR's then-owner Bruton Smith announced a permanent race track in the Dallas-Ft. Worth to place. In February 1995, Denton County, just north of Ft. Worth the bid for the racetrack. Construction work on the circuit began on August 18, 1995. The Texas 500 on April 5, 1997 was the first official race on the new circuit.

The Texas Motor Speedway includes races for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (Samsung 500 and Dickie's 500), the Nationwide Series (O'Reilly 300), the Craftsman Truck Series (Sam's Town 400 and Silverado 350K) and the Indy Racing League .

At the end of April 2001 there was also an attempt to hold a race from the ChampCar series on the track, which was ultimately canceled just 2 hours before the start of the race. Due to the excessive elevation, average speeds were reached in training, as they are at most usual on the significantly larger Super Speedways. A lap driven by Dario Franchitti was 239 miles per hour, only around 1% below the absolute record with vehicles of this type, which was achieved on the much larger California Speedway . At this speed, the large lateral accelerations led to dizziness. Attempts to reduce the race to an acceptable speed of 225 miles per hour through technical changes failed - all that remained was the lap record that is still valid today.

Airplane racing

As part of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship , the racetrack was last used in September 2015 as a venue for an aircraft race , with the course to be flown mainly in the air space above the arena. One of the straight stretches in the interior of the Motodrom was used as a runway for the small, light racing planes, while parts of the racetrack formed the taxiway .
