Chicagoland Speedway is a speedway in Joliet , Illinois, southwest of Chicago . The circuit is located approximately 55 km (36 miles) south of downtown, just off Illinois Route 53 between Joliet and Wilmington . The audience capacity is 75,000. Since opening in 2001, it has become an unexpected draw for NASCAR and Indy Racing League events, where tickets are often sold out months in advance.

The Indy Car Series at Chicagoland Speedway

Although listed as a simple “D” tri-oval, Chicagoland is unique in that the course is a single, continuous curve as the back straight has a recognizable arc. This leads to very high average speeds that almost come close to a super speedway. This shape also leads to an extremely narrow field in the IndyCar races, even for oval races, in which there is practically continuous driving in two or three lines side by side and in which nobody can break away.

history

Between 1999 and 2000, the Chicagoland Speedway was built next to the older Route 66 Raceway . The opening took place in 2001 with races of the NASCAR Winston Cup , the NASCAR Nationwide Series , the ARCA Racing Series and the Indy Racing League . The IROC series was also a guest on the speedway.
