Virginia International Raceway
The Virginia International Raceway (VIR for short) is a racetrack near Alton , near Danville , Virginia . It is located less than half a mile from the North Carolina border.
Events
Events for amateurs, but also professional racing events on automobiles and motorcycles take place on the VIR. The course can also be rented for racing training, club days and private tests. The most important races of today include the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the AMA Superbike Championship .
history
The 3.27 mile long course was opened in August 1957. The course can also be used in three other shorter variants. After its opening, events of the SCCA, the American sports car club, took place. In its debut season in 1966, the popular Trans-Am series initiated by the SCCA began on the VIR.
Since it opened in 1957, the race track has been the venue for a sports car race every year, with interruptions. Known today as the Oak Tree Grand Prix , the event was part of the Rolex Sports Car Series from 2002 to 2011 , then switched to the American Le Mans Series in 2012 and 2013 and has been part of the United SportsCar Championship since 2014 .
