The Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit is a street circuit in Long Beach , California , on which, among other things, the Formula 1 Grand Prix of the USA West was held.

The streets around the Long Beach Convention Center have been cordoned off one weekend a year since 1975 to host the Long Beach Grand Prix , and from 1976 to 1983 the United States Grand Prix West , in which numerous different racing series have already been represented. It is considered the most famous street circuit in the United States . The direction of travel is clockwise.

Racing events

Main event

After the first Long Beach Grand Prix in 1975, in which a Formula 5000 race was held, Formula 1 hosted a total of eight times from 1976 to 1983 under the name " Grand Prix of the USA West ", it is the only race track on that this event has ever been held. It is also noteworthy that no driver managed to win two world championship races or more here.

From 1984 to 2008, the main successor event to the Formula 1 races was the Champ Car series (CART), which is much more popular in the USA . In 2008 this series held its farewell race here, which was already part of the IndyCar Series . The IndyCar Series started in 2009, into which the Champ Car series was incorporated the year before, in return the event on the Twin Ring Motegi was postponed to a later date in the year.

Side events

The Trans-Am series , which was replaced by the Grand-Am in 2006 , started here as a sports car racing series . The American Le Mans Series has been its successor since 2007 .

As a substructure for the IndyCar Series, the Indy Lights has also started here since 2009 . Formula Atlantic performed here from 1989 to 2008 and the original Indy Lights series from 1989 to 2001.

In 2015, the first Long Beach ePrix took place on a shortened version of the route .
