The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is a temporary motorsport racing track on the Île Notre-Dame in the Canadian city of Montréal . The track was named on June 12, 1982 after the Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve . Villeneuve had had a fatal accident at the Belgian Grand Prix five weeks earlier .

The original name Circuit Île-Notre-Dame was derived from the island of the same name. On the street circuit which found 1978-2008 annual Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1 instead. After a one-year hiatus, the event returned in 2010.

Description of the route

L'Épingle hairpin curve

The course is on the Île Notre-Dame, an artificial island in the Saint Lawrence River . When there are no races, parts of the track are open to normal traffic. Due to the location on the elongated island, a fast racing course with long straights has been created. The route has a length of 4.361 km and is driven clockwise.

Since the debut in 1978, the route has hardly been varied. The main changes were the relocation of the start-finish line and the pit lane from the area behind the hairpin "Épingle des Stands" to the end of the straight "Droit du Casino" in 1987 and the relocation of the pit exit for the 2002 season, which is not now merges more into the first curve, but into the following hairpin "Virage de Senna" (formerly: "Épingle de l'île").

The track has been notorious since 1999 with the “Wall of Champions” at the end of the last chicane before the start and finish, where the three F1 world champions Damon Hill , Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve collided during the 1999 race had to end the race early. Also of Ricardo Zonta , GT1 world champion in 1998 , was stranded first in the wall. Ironically, at the time, the wall was labeled “Bienvenue au Québec” (Welcome to Québec ).

The track offers the possibility of comparing the three largest racing series. In addition to the Formula 1 World Championship, races of the American Champ Car Series were held from 2002 to 2006 . The NASCAR Nationwide Series has also been a guest at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve since 2007 . In qualifying for the 2006 Canadian Grand Prix , the fastest driver was 1: 14.942 minutes, around five seconds faster than the winner of the qualifying for the Montreal Grand Prix of the Champ Car Series, who achieved a time of 1: 20.005 minutes.

Others

The race was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
