Reports
background
After the Monaco Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 12 points ahead of David Coulthard and 28 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 32 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 58 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
Ricardo Zonta replaced Jordan Heinz-Harald Frentzen , who had an accident in the first free practice, and thus returned to Formula 1.
With Michael Schumacher (four times), Mika Häkkinen and Jean Alesi (once each), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In Friday practice, Häkkinen set the fastest time. He was followed by his teammate Coulthard and Eddie Irvine . The world championship leader Michael Schumacher had problems to find the right setup in this training and only drove the eleventh fastest time. Heinz-Harald Frentzen injured himself during this training session and was replaced by Ricardo Zonta for the rest of the weekend .
During the training session on Saturday, Schumacher had adjusted his car better and set the fastest time ahead of Coulthard and Häkkinen.
Qualifying
Michael Schumacher confirmed his performance from the second free practice and secured the pole position. Ralf Schumacher was second fastest ahead of Coulthard.
Warm up
In the warm-up, Olivier Panis set the fastest time ahead of Coulthard and Zonta.
run
The race was shaped by the brother duel Ralf against Michael Schumacher .
Starting from pole position , Michael Schumacher kept the lead from his younger brother. Both separated from the rest of the field and made the victory among themselves. Ralf Schumacher put a lot of pressure on Michael for several laps. He was a lot more competitive on the straights in particular, but didn't get past despite several attempts. When Michael Schumacher was the first of the two to turn into the pits for his only pit stop, Ralf immediately set faster lap times than before. Michael, who came back on the track in second position, was unable to make up for his brother's lead, so that Ralf maintained his lead right through to the finish line after his pit stop and thus clinched his second win of the season.
Mika Häkkinen came third behind the Schumacher brothers . It was Häkkinen's first podium finish of the season. Kimi Räikkönen , Jean Alesi and Pedro de la Rosa completed the points. Only nine drivers saw the checkered flag, eleven were classified.
