After the US Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 52 points ahead of David Coulthard and 59 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari was leading the constructors' championship with 72 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 94 points ahead of Williams-BMW . Michael Schumacher and Ferrari were already established as world champions.
With Michael Schumacher (three times) and Mika Häkkinen (twice) two former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Jean Alesi and Häkkinen drove their last Grand Prix.

In the first free practice session, which consisted of two joint timekeeping sessions, Alesi set the fastest time ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Pedro de la Rosa . During the first session Tomáš Enge had an accident in the 130R corner . He was uninjured, but his car was not repaired in time for the second session.
In the second free practice session, the two Williams BMW drivers took the lead. Ralf Schumacher drove faster than Montoya. Coulthard followed in third place.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher secured pole position ahead of Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.
Warm up
Michael Schumacher was also the fastest in the warm-up. He was followed by Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld .

Michael Schumacher won the race ahead of Montoya and Coulthard. Häkkinen finished fourth in his last Grand Prix. The fastest lap went to Ralf Schumacher.
