The Japanese Grand Prix in 2017 (officially 2017 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix ) took place on 8 October at the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka place and was the sixteenth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2017 .
report
backgrounds
After the Malaysian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 34 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 59 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 118 points and Red Bull Racing with 233 points .
At the Japanese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, several small changes were made to the route to increase safety. At the exit of the ridge and turn two , further curbs were installed behind the existing curbs , and the artificial turf was replaced there by an asphalt strip. Additional tire stacks were also installed in both corners, just like in turn four , the Gyaku Bank , the Dunlop , turn nine , the hairpin and the spoon .
As in the previous year, there was only one DRS zone on the start-finish straight , the measuring point was 50 meters in front of the Casio Triangle .
Kevin Magnussen , (seven), Jolyon Palmer (six), Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (five), Nico Hülkenberg (four), Romain Grosjean , Kimi Räikkönen , Carlos Sainz jr. , Max Verstappen (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Pascal Wehrlein (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Vettel (four times), Hamilton (three times), Fernando Alonso (twice) and Räikkönen (once) four former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Alonso and Hamilton each won the Japanese Grand Prix once when the race was held at Fuji Speedway in 2007 and 2008 .
Race stewards were Tom Kristensen (DEN), Tim Mayer (USA), Takashi Mitarashi (JAP) and Nish Shetty (SIN).
free training
In the first free practice Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 29.166 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo . The training had to be interrupted after an accident by Sainz.
In the second free practice session, which, unlike the first, took place in the rain, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 48.719 minutes, ahead of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Pérez . Because of the bad weather conditions, the training session was shortened to 45 minutes, and only five pilots drove a timed lap.
Bottas drove the fastest time in the third free practice with a lap time of 1: 29.055 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. The training was interrupted twice after accidents by Bottas and Räikkönen.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. The segment was canceled about a minute before the end after an accident by Grosjean. Hamilton was fastest but, like Vettel, used the soft mixture. All the other drivers drove supersoft . The Sauber drivers, Lance Stroll , Pierre Gasly and Grosjean were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was again fastest. In contrast to the other pilots, Bottas and Raikkonen spent their time on the soft mix. Sainz, the Renault drivers, Magnussen and Vandoorne were eliminated.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 27.319 minutes ahead of Bottas and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 71st pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and his first in Suzuka. As a result, Hamilton achieved at least one pole position on all racetracks on the 2017 racing calendar.
Bottas was moved five positions back due to a premature gear change. Sainz was moved back 20 starting positions this season to use the sixth MGU-H as well as the fifth combustion engine and turbocharger . Alonso was relocated by a total of 35 starting places this season for the use of the tenth MGU-H and turbocharger, the eighth MGU-K and combustion engine, the seventh energy storage device and the sixth control electronics. Palmer has been moved down 20 positions this season to use the sixth MGU-H and turbocharger and fifth internal combustion engine. After his accident in the third free practice session, the gearbox had to be changed at Raikkonen too, so he was also postponed by five starting positions.
run
Hamilton won the race ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo. It was the 61st victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the eighth this season. Verstappen took the third and Ricciardo the ninth podium this season. Thus, for the first time in the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship, the same drivers were on the podium at two consecutive Grand Prix races. The remaining points were placed by Bottas, Raikkonen, Ocon, Pérez, Magnussen, Grosjean and Massa.
Hamilton thus increased his lead in the overall standings on Vettel to 59 points, Bottas caught up on Vettel. With only 100 points left to be awarded, none of the other drivers had a chance of winning the title. Mercedes increased its lead over Ferrari in the constructors' championship. Red Bull caught up with Ferrari, but now had no mathematical chance to catch up with Mercedes.
