Career
Beginnings in motorsport (2000–2009)
Ricciardo began his motorsport career at the age of nine in karting . In 2005 he moved into the Australian Formula Ford and made his first experience in Formula racing . In 2006 Ricciardo competed in the Asian Formula BMW and finished third overall with two race wins. At the Formula BMW World Final, for which he had qualified, he finished fifth. He also took part in two British Formula BMW races. In 2007 Ricciardo moved to Europe in the Italian Formula Renault , in which he was sixth in the overall standings. After he had already completed a few races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup as a guest starter in 2007, he was runner-up in this series in 2008 behind Valtteri Bottas . Things went even better for Ricciardo in the Western European Formula Renault, in which he won the championship title ahead of Roberto Merhi .
Ricciardo recommended himself with his achievements for a cockpit in the British Formula 3 championship , which he received in 2009 at Carlin Motorsport . With three wins in the first four races, Ricciardo secured the lead in the championship early on, which he won with another three wins one race weekend before the end of the season in Portimão , where a Formula Renault 3.5 race weekend also took part during the season . Ricciardo is the first Australian since David Brabham to win the prestigious championship title of this series. Just like Brabham, Ricciardo won the title with a Volkswagen engine. Like Jaime Alguersuari , who won the British Formula 3 Championship a year earlier, Ricciardo was promoted by Red Bull .
Formula Renault 3.5 and Formula 1 debut with HRT (2010-2011)
In 2010 Ricciardo switched to Tech 1 Racing in Formula Renault 3.5, where he became a teammate of Brendon Hartley . After achieving pole position and a podium finish in his first race , he clinched his first victory in Formula Renault 3.5 in his fifth race at the Circuit de Monaco . With a total of four wins he lost the title duel against Mikhail Aljoschin with 138 to 136 points and became runner-up. Having during test drives for in December 2009, Red Bull Racing their first experience in Formula 1 had collected, he was together with his team-mate Hartley of the Formula 1 racing teams, Red Bull and Toro Rosso as a replacement and test driver for the 2010 season under contract taken. The two racing drivers initially took on this position alternately. From the German Grand Prix onwards , Ricciardo took this position in every race. If both were prevented, they were represented by David Coulthard . After the season, Ricciardo completed two Formula 1 test days for Red Bull Racing at the so-called Young Driver Days . He set the fastest time on both days. He managed to beat the fastest time of the previous race weekend that his team-mate Sebastian Vettel had achieved in qualifying.
In 2011 Ricciardo completed his second season in Formula Renault 3.5 for ISR . Ricciardo was represented by Lewis Williamson at the season opener and finale of the Formula Renault 3.5 due to overlapping dates . Ricciardo won the race in Monte Carlo and was on the podium six times. He finished the season on the fifth championship course. In addition, Ricciardo initially took over the test driver position again at Red Bull and Toro Rosso in 2011 . At Toro Rosso he took part in the first eight Grand Prix in this role in the first free practice. From the Grand Prix of Great Britain he took over the HRT cockpit from Narain Karthikeyan and made his debut in Formula 1. At the end of the season he was 27th in the drivers' world championship. Against his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi he won the internal race duel 6: 3.
Formula 1 (since 2012)
In 2012 Ricciardo started together with Jean-Éric Vergne for Toro Rosso in Formula 1. Already at the season opener, his home Grand Prix in Australia , he scored points in Formula 1 for the first time with a ninth place. This place he achieved with three other races of the season. With a total of six points, he finished the season in 18th place in the drivers' championship. He was defeated internally by Vergne with 10 to 16 points.
In 2013 Ricciardo and Vergne stayed with Toro Rosso. At the Chinese Grand Prix he achieved his best result in Formula 1 with seventh place. In Great Britain Ricciardo qualified for fifth place on the grid. In the race he fell back to eighth place. Riccardo finished the year in 14th place in the drivers' championship. With 20 to 13 points he prevailed internally against Vergne.
In 2014 Ricciardo received a cockpit for the Toro Rosso sister team Red Bull Racing. His contract with the racing team ran for at least three years. Ricciardo thus became the successor of his compatriot Mark Webber and teammate of the four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel . When the permanent start numbers were introduced, he chose # 3 in memory of Dale Earnhardt and because it was the first number of his karting career. He was second on the podium on his first appearance in Australia . However, since his Red Bull RB10 exceeded the maximum permissible fuel flow rate several times during the race, he was disqualified after the race. In the third race in Bahrain Ricciardo started from 13th place after a penalty due to an unsafe pit stop in the previous race and improved to fourth position in the race. He achieved his best Formula 1 result to date. Ricciardo repeated this placement at the next race in China . At the Spanish Grand Prix in 2014 , the fifth race, Ricciardo finally achieved the first podium with a third place. He repeated this result at the Monaco Grand Prix . In the following race in Canada Ricciardo took the lead for the first time with three laps to go and scored his first victory. At the Hungarian Grand Prix , Ricciardo improved from third to first place in the final laps with better tires and won his second race. In the following race in Belgium Ricciardo won again. With three wins, Ricciardo was the only winner who did not drive for Mercedes . In total, he was on the podium eight times. Ricciardo improved to third place in the drivers' standings and thus achieved his best overall Formula 1 position to date. Within the team, he prevailed against Vettel with 238 to 167 points.
In 2015 Ricciardo got Daniil Kwjat as a new team-mate at Red Bull. He finished third at the Hungarian Grand Prix and came second in Singapore . Ricciardo was defeated internally by Kwjat with 92 to 95 points and was eighth in the drivers' world championship.
Ricciardo stayed with Red Bull in 2016. Kwjat started the season as his team-mate, but was replaced by Max Verstappen after the fourth race . In Monaco , Ricciardo achieved his first pole position in Formula 1. In the race he lost the lead after a bad pit stop by his team to Lewis Hamilton and finally came second. At the Hungarian Grand Prix he finished third and a week later in Germany he came second again. He then finished second in the Belgian Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix . Ricciardo took his first win of the season in Malaysia . After a third place in the USA , he finished fifth at the Mexican Grand Prix , but was still third after time penalties for Verstappen and Vettel, who had cut Ricciardo in his overtaking maneuver. With this, he secured third place in the drivers' championship two races before the end of the season. Ricciardo was the only driver to finish every race in 2016. Only at the Russian Grand Prix did he not make it into the points. He scored a total of 256 points.
In 2017 Ricciardo and Verstappen again formed the Red Bull driver duo. He came third at the Spanish Grand Prix , the Monaco Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix . In Azerbaijan , he won the season for the first time. One race later he was third in the Austrian Grand Prix . He also reached third place in Belgium . At the Singapore Grand Prix , he finished second in the next Grand Prix in Malaysia and Japan third. At the end of the season he finished fifth in the drivers' championship with 200 points.
In 2018 Ricciardo competed for Red Bull again. He won the third race, the Chinese Grand Prix . He achieved his second victory in Monaco . At the end of the season he was in sixth place in the drivers' standings with 170 points.
In 2019 Ricciardo switched to Renault . His teammate was Nico Hülkenberg . Ricciardo finished sixth in the Japanese Grand Prix but was disqualified days later due to a protest from Racing Point. At the end of the season he finished ninth overall with 54 points.
In May 2020 , it was announced in May that Ricciardo would join McLaren in 2021 , where he would be Carlos Sainz jr. that goes to Ferrari . After the seventh race, he is currently eighth in the drivers' standings with 33 points.
