The Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi in 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ) took place on 23 November at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island instead and was the 19th and final race of the Formula 1 World Championship 2014 .

Reports

background

After the Brazilian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 17 points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 120 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 278 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 397 points ahead of Williams . This meant that only Hamilton and Rosberg had a chance of winning the drivers' title.

After Caterham had to skip the two races after the Russian Grand Prix due to bankruptcy , the team returned to this race after a successful crowdfunding that raised around two million British pounds. Marcus Ericsson , who had contested all 16 races of the season in which the team competed as a driver with Caterham, terminated his contract with the team before the race. The vacated space was offered to André Lotterer , who had taken over the cockpit of Kamui Kobayashi for a race at the Belgian Grand Prix , but the latter declined the offer. Eventually, Will Stevens took over the second Caterham. Stevens made his Formula 1 debut. He was previously active for Strakka Racing in Formula Renault 3.5 and was part of the Caterham support program. In this role, he had already completed Formula 1 test drives and simulator work for the team in advance and was therefore in possession of a super license .

Following the development at Caterham, the insolvency administrator of the also insolvent Marussia team tried to get the team to start in this race. The very short-term attempt, which only became known on the Wednesday before the race, failed on the same day after the insolvency administrator - unlike Caterham - was unable to raise the funds necessary for a trip to Abu Dhabi.

At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

No other changes have been made to the track since the last race. As in the past, there were two DRS zones on the course. The first zone began 390 meters after curve 7 , the measuring point was 40 meters before the curve. The second measuring point was 50 meters after curve 9 , the zone began in curve 10 .

Pastor Maldonado (five), Kevin Magnussen (four), Jean-Éric Vergne (three), Valtteri Bottas , Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Esteban Gutiérrez (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Sebastian Vettel (three times), Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen (once each), all three previous winners competed in this race.

Khaled Bin Shaiban (ARE), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Steve Stringwell (GBR) and Danny Sullivan acted as race stewards .

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Fernando Alonso . In this training session, three drivers, Adderly Fong , Esteban Ocon and Stevens, were used for the first time at a Formula 1 weekend: Stevens as Caterham driver for the entire weekend, Ocon took over the Lotus from Maldonado and Fong took over the Sauber from Sutil for the first free practice. Stevens only did timed laps at the end of practice, after his fire extinguisher was triggered after the installation lap and the vehicle was cleaned. In the second free practice, Hamilton stayed ahead of Rosberg. Magnussen came in third. Alonso did not set any time because he had to retire at the beginning of the training session with a technical defect.

In the third free practice, Rosberg took the lead from Hamilton. Massa finished third, one second behind the leader.

Qualifying

Due to the higher number of participants compared to the two previous races, the qualifying format was slightly modified. It consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Caterham and Lotus pilots and Gutiérrez were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was the fastest. The Force India pilots as well as Sutil, Vergne and Magnussen were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg finally achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Bottas.

Grosjean was moved back 20 starting positions as he used a sixth internal combustion engine, a sixth turbocharger and a sixth ERS-H. Since he could only be moved back four positions, the remaining 16 positions of the penalty transfer were converted into a drive-through penalty. The two Red Bull drivers Ricciardo and Vettel, who had reached positions five and six, were excluded from the classification after qualifying, as a violation of Article 3.15 of the technical regulations was found during the technical inspection. The front wing flaps deformed under aerodynamic load. Both drivers were initially allowed to start from the end of the grid. The starting numbers of the drivers decided on the starting position, so that Vettel got 19th and Ricciardo 20th. However, since the vehicles had to be modified due to the rule violation, Red Bull committed a violation of Article 34.6 of the sporting regulations - the so-called Parc Fermé rule. As a result, both drivers lost their starting positions and had to start from the pit lane.

run

Hamilton won the start against Rosberg. Bottas also started badly from third place on the grid and fell back to eighth. Rosberg took second place ahead of Massa. Hamilton extended the lead over Rosberg to over a second within the first two laps, so that Rosberg was not allowed to use the DRS released from then on from the third lap . In the initial phase there was a collision between Hülkenberg and Magnussen, for which Hülkenberg received a five-second time penalty. Magnussen then reported a possible problem with the front right wheel suspension by radio, but this did not come true.

Alonso began the first pit stop phase on lap five. Before that he had overtaken Raikkonen. Raikkonen shortly thereafter lost two more positions to Kwjat and Bottas. One lap after Alonso, Button in fourth, Kwjat in fifth and Raikkonen in seventh, three more drivers from the leading group made their first pit stop. Since the field had not yet expanded too much, these drivers initially lost more than ten positions and were unable to move freely and had to overtake some drivers.

Leading Hamilton and fourth-placed Bottas pitted in the ninth lap. Rosberg followed one lap later. Massa briefly took the lead in front of Hamilton and Rosberg, until he also pitted. While Massa was back in third place after the stop, Bottas fell behind drivers who had not yet been in the pits, but came back on the track through the later stop before Button. On the 16th lap Kwjat retired due to a technical defect.

At the top, Rosberg drove the fastest race lap up to that point several times, but Hamilton managed to keep a gap of around two seconds. With Ricciardo, Magnussen and Vettel, there were three drivers in the top 10 who started on the harder tire compound and were not yet in the pits. Bottas, who had fallen behind Ricciardo and Magnussen due to his stop, overtook both on the track. Magnussen and Vettel made the first stop on lap 21. Magnussen switched to the softer mixture, Vettel stayed on the harder one. Ricciardo, who was fifth, stayed on the track until the end of the 27th lap, while some drivers in the back field had already pitted a second time.

After Rosberg braked himself on lap 24, he reported a problem with the hybrid system to the pits by radio. As a result, Rosberg set the slowest times in the entire field and was overtaken by Massa. Hamilton then reduced his speed at the front, as he was already more than ten seconds ahead of Massa. Maldonado retired during this racing phase with an engine failure.

In the 31st lap, Hamilton pitted for the second time. Massa then took the lead. Hamilton fell back to third right behind Rosberg, but overtook him on the straight after his pit stop on the lap. One lap later, Bottas also passed Rosberg. On the 34th lap, Rosberg also completed his second and final pit stop. He fell back to seventh place behind Ricciardo, Pérez and Hülkenberg. The three drivers in front of him had not yet completed their last stop. Rosberg lost further positions in the next few laps and was thus outside of the points.

In the final phase, Massa pitted again and switched to the softer tire compound. After his pit stop he was around twelve seconds behind Hamilton and drove the fastest laps in the field, but was only able to reduce the gap to three seconds. Ricciardo and Vettel also switched to the softer mixture in the final phase. Ricciardo achieved the fastest race lap with these tires. Two laps before the end of the race, Rosberg, who was about to lap it, was instructed to give up the race and head for the pit. However, he asked Paddy Lowe to be allowed to continue and finish the race, and he crossed the finish line in 14th place, one lap behind.

Hamilton won the race and the drivers' world championship for the second time in his career. He became the first world champion with a Mercedes chassis since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1955 and the first British driver since Jackie Stewart in 1971 to become world champion for the second time. Massa and Bottas completed the podium. This was the first time since 2005 that both Williams drivers achieved podium finishes. Ricciardo was fourth, Button fifth. Hülkenberg, Pérez, Vettel, Alonso and Räikkönen completed the top 10. Once again, Sauber did not score points and for the first time in the history of the racing team failed to score points in one season. Tenth place in the constructors' world championship was also Sauber's worst overall result.

In the constructors' championship all positions remained unchanged. Although there were double points in the race for the first time in the history of the World Championship, this only affected three positions in the drivers' standings. Only Pérez, Magnussen and Räikkönen, who were in that order in places ten to twelve, would have achieved a different overall ranking, whereby Pérez would have fallen behind Magnussen and Räikkönen. For the designers, the regulation had no impact at all on the final score.
