Max Chilton (born April 21, 1991 in Reigate , England ) is a British automobile racing driver . He drove in the GP2 series from 2010 to 2012 . In 2013 and 2014 he started for Marussia in Formula 1 . In 2015 he competed in Indy Lights . In 2016 he drove in the IndyCar Series . He is the younger brother of Tom Chilton , who is also a racing car driver.

Career

Chilton began his motorsport career in 2001 in karting , which he practiced until 2006. At the same time, Chilton drove in the 2005 and 2006 T Cars championship , a racing series for drivers between the ages of 14 and 17. After finishing eighth in the first season, he won the runner-up title in 2006. In 2007 Chilton moved to Arena International Motorsport in the British Formula 3 Championship . Since he was not yet 16 years old at the first race of the season, he was only allowed to join the series at the second race weekend. He also started, as the youngest driver in the championship to date, in the Silverstone 1000 km race of the Le Mans Series . He and his brother Tom finished fifth in the LMP1 category for Arena International Motorsport. In 2008 Chilton stayed in the British Formula 3 Championship and switched to Hitech Racing . With a second place as the best result, he finished tenth overall at the end of the season. In 2009 , the now 18-year-old racing driver contested his third season in the British Formula 3 Championship and started for Carlin Motorsport . While his team mate Daniel Ricciardo won the championship, Chilton finished fourth overall with two wins. He also took part in the race on the Circuit de Monaco as a substitute driver in the Formula Renault 3.5 .

For the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 Chilton was signed by the Barwa Addax team . Since Barwa Addax wanted to use Giedo van der Garde at the second race weekend, he started this run for Ocean Racing Technology . At the end of the season he finished 18th overall. For Ocean Racing Technology, he also competed in the main series of GP2 in 2010 . With a fifth place as the best result, he finished 25th overall. In 2011 Chilton returned to Carlin and competed in the GP2 Asia and GP2 series for the racing team that was now owned by his father Grahame. In the GP2 Asia series , he was 22nd overall. In the GP2 series , with two sixth places as the best results, he finished 20th in the drivers' standings. After the season he took part in the 2011 GP2 Final for Carlin and finished 23rd. In addition, Chilton made his first experiences in a Formula 1 car during test drives for Force India . In 2012 , Chilton stayed with Carlin in the GP2 series. At the start of the season he already achieved his first GP2 podium with a third place. In the sprint race in Monte Carlo , he achieved second place. On the Hungaroring he finally achieved his first GP2 victory in the main race. Chilton achieved another victory in the main race in Singapore . He finished the season with 169 points in fourth place overall and thus clearly prevailed internally against his team-mate Rio Haryanto , who scored 38 points. In addition, Chilton completed Formula 1 test drives for Marussia this year . After the GP2 season, Chilton was also signed by Marussia as a Formula 1 reserve driver.

Chilton in free practice for the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix

For the 2013 season Chilton moved to Formula 1 at Marussia. On his debut in Australia he finished 17th. His best result was a 14th place in the Monaco Grand Prix . Chilton reached the finish line in all 19 races of his debut season, setting a new record. He finished the season in 23rd place overall. Within the team he was defeated by Jules Bianchi , who was 19th and clearly won both the qualifying and racing duels. In 2014 , Chilton stayed with Marussia. He chose # 4 as his permanent starting number. After he had always crossed the finish line in the first 25 races of his career, he was eliminated from the Canadian Grand Prix for the first time after a collision with his teammate. At the Belgian Grand Prix he was supposed to be represented by Alexander Rossi for contractual reasons . However, Chilton was reported again as a pilot for the second free practice. After the Russian Grand Prix , Marussia filed for bankruptcy and as a result did not start the next race. Two 13th places were Chilton's best results. At the end of the season he finished 21st overall with no points. His team-mate Bianchi, who had a serious accident in Japan , scored the first points for Marussia this season.

US formula racing

In 2015 , Chilton supported the family racing team Carlin as a racing driver when they entered the Indy Lights . At the race at the Iowa Speedway he achieved his first pole position and his first victory, which he dedicated to his former team-mate Jules Bianchi, who had died the day before. Chilton finished the season in fifth place, losing to teammate Ed Jones , who was third. Chilton did not compete in two races due to an overlap with its endurance program, which Chilton completed in 2015 . He drove for Nissan Motorsports in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). However, the racing team only entered the championship for the third race, the 2015 Le Mans 24-hour race , and then withdrew from the current season.

In 2016 Chilton moved to Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series . With a seventh place as the best result, he finished the season in 19th place overall. He was the only Ganassi pilot who did not make it into the top ten of the overall standings. In 2017 , he finished the Indianapolis 500 in fourth place. With 50 laps, he led the most laps. He finished the season in eleventh place. In 2018 he drove for Team Carlin , which had just entered the series. He finished 19th in the drivers' championship. In the course of the 2019 season he announced that he no longer wanted to drive oval races. He gave security concerns as the reason.

Personal

Chilton's father Grahame Chilton was meanwhile the vice chairman of the US company Aon Corporation . The company acted as a sponsor of Max Chilton during this time. Grahame Chilton has been owned by the Carlin racing team through his Capsicum company since the end of 2009 .
