Rio Haryanto (born January 22, 1993 in Surakarta ) is an Indonesian racing driver . He started in the GP2 series from 2012 to 2015 and finished fourth there in 2015. In 2016 he drove for Manor in Formula 1 .

Career

Haryanto began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 , where he was active until 2008. Among other things, he won the Asian Junior Championship from 2005 to 2007 and was champion of the Indonesian Kart Championship in 2008. He also made his debut in formula racing in 2008, competing in the Asian Formula Renault Challenge, which he finished sixth, and in Formula Asia 2.0 , in which he was third overall. After starting five races of the Pacific Formula BMW in 2008 , he entered this championship in 2009. Haryanto dominated the season, was classified as the winner in eleven of 15 races and secured the championship title by a clear margin. He also took part in some races of various championships.

In 2010 Haryanto moved to Manor Racing in Europe and started in the first season of the GP3 series . He achieved his first victory in the sprint race in Istanbul . At the end of the season he finished fifth overall. As the best driver on his team, he was rewarded with Formula 1 test drives for Virgin Racing , Manor's Formula 1 racing team , at the age of 17 . He also appeared for Manor on two race weekends of the 2010 season of British Formula 3 Championship and finished in 20th place overall. He also took part in two races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup as a guest starter . In 2011 , Haryanto completed his second season in the GP3 series for Manor Racing. After he had only scored his first points on the fourth race weekend, two victories followed on the next two race weekends. He finished the season in seventh place in the championship. Within the team he had to admit defeat to Adrian Quaife-Hobbs . Moreover Haryanto came in 2011 for DAMS in Auto GP on. He did not take part in an event due to an overlap with the GP3 series. With a win, he also finished the drivers' championship in seventh place in this series. At the end of the year, Haryanto took part in the 2011 GP2 Final for DAMS and finished 17th.

In 2012 , Haryanto competed for Carlin in the GP2 series . While his teammate Max Chilton was fourth overall with two wins, Haryanto achieved 14th overall with a fifth place as the best result. Haryanto also completed Formula 1 test drives for Marussia. In 2013 , Haryanto switched to Barwa Addax within the GP2 series . In the sprint race at Silverstone , he was second on the podium for the first time. It was his only podium finish of the season. While his teammate Jake Rosenzweig remained without points, Haryanto reached 19th place overall with 22 points. In 2014 , Haryanto contested his third GP2 season for Caterham Racing . In the sprint race in Monte Carlo he achieved a podium finish in third place. He finished the season in 15th place overall.

In 2015 , Haryanto competed in the GP2 series for Campos Racing . He won his first GP2 race in the sprint race in as-Sachir . Further victories followed in the sprint races in Spielberg and Silverstone . Haryanto finished the season in fourth place overall and won internally with 138 to 60 points against his teammate Arthur Pic .

In 2016 , Haryanto switched to Manor Racing in Formula 1 and decided on the number 88. He had already completed test drives for the team in 2010, when the team was still called Virgin. In his debut race in Australia he was eliminated. He achieved his best result with 15th place at the Monaco Grand Prix . Haryanto lost his cockpit after the twelfth race, the Grand Prix of Germany , to Esteban Ocon after his sponsors could no longer meet its financial payments to the team. While Haryanto was only marginally defeated by his team mate Pascal Wehrlein 5-7 in the qualifying duel, Haryanto finished every race in which both Manor drivers were rated behind Wehrlein.

Personal

Haryanto's father is president of the Indonesian stationery and office supply company PT. Solo Murni . The Kiky brand, which belongs to the company, sponsored Haryanto in several motorsport commitments.
