The 2016 Monaco Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2016 ) took place on May 29 at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 39 points ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and 43 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 48 points and Red Bull with 63 points .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . It was the first Grand Prix in which the Ultrasoft compound was used.

Large parts of the route were re-paved before the Grand Prix, and TecPro barriers were installed in the corners of Sainte Devote , Mirabeau Haute and Tunel . In addition, the guard rails in the Sainte Devote were reinforced and safety fences were erected to better protect the marshals .

In contrast to the other racetracks on the racing calendar, there was only one DRS zone in Monaco, which was on the start-and-finish straight and remained unchanged compared to the previous year. It started 18 meters after the last curve, the measuring point was 80 meters behind the piscine .

Max Verstappen (six), Daniil Kwjat (five), Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg (four each), Räikkönen, Sebastian Vettel (three each), Fernando Alonso , Valtteri Bottas , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Rosberg (three times), Alonso (twice), Raikkonen, Hamilton, Jenson Button and Vettel (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Christian Calmes (MON), Garry Connelly (AUS) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

A rule change came into force at the Monaco Grand Prix that forbade drivers from throwing tear-off visors out of the cockpit on the racetrack. In the past there had been several problems because the discarded visors got caught in the cooling openings of the vehicles and thus impaired cooling. The FIA classified this as a safety risk, especially with the brake ventilation. After the first two free practice sessions, however, the FIA moved away from the ban, the drivers were only encouraged to keep the number of visors to a minimum.

For the first time , Renault used the further developed version of the Renault Energy F1 2016 , which had already been tested in the test drives in Barcelona , but which was only available to Renault works driver Kevin Magnussen and Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo . Their respective teammates still had to compete with the old version, which, according to media reports, developed around 25 kW less power. Renault justified this with insufficient capacity to bring four further developed engines to the start in Monaco, as well as the possibility of direct comparison between the old and new expansion stage. Renault invested three of the 24 available tokens for further development.

training

In the first free practice, which, in contrast to the other Grands Prix, took place on Thursday, Hamilton was fastest with a lap time of 1: 15.537 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. There were several accidents and spinning, for Felipe Massa and Jolyon Palmer the session ended prematurely after accidents, for Gutiérrez after a technical problem with the engine. The training was stopped three minutes before the end because a manhole cover came off the exit of the Sainte Devote when Rosberg drove over it. Rosberg suffered a tire damage at the rear left, the manhole cover was then thrown in front of the McLaren by Button, who suffered damage to the front wing as well as a tire damage and a broken suspension at the front right.

In the second free practice, Ricciardo set the fastest time in 1: 14.607 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. During this training session, too, there were several spins and accidents, Haryanto and Magnussen had to end the training early after their vehicles hit the track barrier. Grosjean and Vettel (twice) were able to drive their vehicle back to the pits for repairs after contact with the track barrier.

In the third free practice session, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 14.650 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. The section had to be interrupted twice: The first interruption occurred after around two minutes due to an engine failure by Nasr, who parked his vehicle at the edge of the track and therefore did not set a time. Later in the qualifying segment, Verstappen crashed into the barriers in the Piscine chicane after a driving error. Neither of them qualified for the Grand Prix. In addition, both Manor drivers, Palmer and Ericsson were eliminated. Vettel was fastest.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. Magnussen, the Haas and Williams pilots and Button were eliminated. Ricciardo achieved his time as the only pilot on the supersoft tires.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton stopped at the beginning of the section with a problem with the fuel supply at the end of the pit lane, but was able to start qualifying a few minutes later. Ricciardo set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 13.622 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Hamilton. It was Ricciardo’s first pole position and the first for a Red Bull driver since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix .

Following qualifying, Raikkonen was moved back five positions because the gearbox of his Ferrari was changed. Kwjat received no penalty even though the underbody on his Toro Rosso was not compliant, as his team was able to prove that the violation resulted from Kwjat driving too hard over the curbs in Q3 . This was confirmed by the fact that Kvjat was significantly slower in Q3 than in Q2. The race stewards also investigated Magnussen because he had left the pit lane in Q1 despite the red light at the pit lane exit. An analysis of the data showed that the traffic light had already been red for two seconds at this point, but the display in Magnussen's cockpit only changed 0.55 seconds before leaving the pit lane. Since Magnussen also had to pay attention to the route that describes a curve in the area of the pit exit, the race stewards considered it unreasonable to stop the vehicle in such a short time and waived a penalty. Since the chassis was damaged in Verstappen's accident and has to be replaced, which is a violation of the parc fermé regulations , Verstappen had to start the race from the pit lane. The due engine change at Nasr was also a violation of the parc fermé regulations, so Nasr had to start from the pit lane.

run

Since it was raining heavily before the start of the race, the race management decided to start the race behind the safety car . This forced all drivers to use rain tires. Verstappen and Nasr were able to start immediately behind the field and line up at the end.

After Pérez in seventh place, a large gap appeared after just a few meters, as Kwjat drove with an activated speed limiter for the pit lane due to an electronics problem and could not switch it off. He drove only 60 km / h and at the end of the lap he pitted, where he had the steering wheel on his car replaced. More problems arose during the pit stop, and the long pit stop lapped it. However, the problem was not resolved with the change of the steering wheel. On the following lap, Kwjat reported by radio to the pits that he could continue to drive extremely slowly. A lap later, he drove through the pit lane again without stopping at the pits. The problem no longer existed.

After the rain stopped and several pilots had been complaining by radio since the fourth lap that the conditions had now improved and that it was no longer necessary to drive behind the safety car, the race was released at the end of the seventh lap. Magnussen already switched to intermediates in this lap . On the start-finish straight, Palmer's rear broke out on a lane marking, he could no longer intercept the car and hit the barrier. The race management decided to call a virtual safety car phase . Button, Nasr and the lapped Kwjat used this to switch to intermediates on lap eight as well .

At the end of the tenth lap the race was released again. In the Grand Hotel Hairpin , Raikkonen slid straight ahead into the boundary of the track and damaged the front wing, which was stuck under his left front wheel. He initially drove on and slipped straight ahead in the following right-hand bend Mirabeau Bas, blocking Grosjean, who even had to stop and lost several positions. Raikkonen drove on again, but then parked his vehicle in the Nouvelle Chicane run-off zone . While Ricciardo was clearly ahead of the pack, Rosberg held the Hamilton, Vettel, Hülkenberg, Carlos Sainz jr. and Pérez on. After Ericsson and Haryanto in the eleventh lap, Verstappen switched to intermediates one lap later, and another lap later, Vettel as the first driver from the leading group. He fell back to eleventh place behind Massa. Alonso changed tires on the following lap, then Hülkenberg, Bottas and Grosjean on lap 15.

Meanwhile, Rosberg let Hamilton pass, who was immediately able to pull away by several seconds and set the fastest race lap up to that point. However, he was already around 14 seconds behind Ricciardo. On lap 16, Vettel overtook Massa, but skipped the Nouvelle Chicane and then let Massa pass again. Behind them drove Hulkenberg and Alonso, who caught up with Massa and Vettel. Meanwhile, Verstappen overtook Nasr, Magnussen, Pascal Wehrlein and Bottas in the back of the field within three laps .

On lap 20, Rosberg and Massa pitted to change tires. The lapped Kvjat collided with Magnussen while trying to overtake him in the Rascasse . Kwjat was eliminated and received for causing this collision a backward transfer by three starting positions in the next race and two penalty points.

One lap later, Sainz and Pérez came into the pits to change tires. Sainz had a problem with the right front wheel so he lost several seconds and Pérez passed. Pérez came back on the track between Rosberg and Vettel, Sainz immediately after the Hülkenberg behind it. On lap 23 Ricciardo switched to Intermediates and dropped back to second place. Except for the now leading Hamilton and Wehrlein in 13th place, all drivers had changed their tires. Meanwhile, Verstappen overtook Button and was now in tenth place.

Hamilton was leading by around ten seconds ahead of Ricciardo, who was catching up several seconds per lap. Third-placed Rosberg was already more than 30 seconds behind. In the 28th lap Ricciardo caught up with Hamilton.

On the 29th lap, Ericsson was the first driver to switch to slicks, and on the following three laps, so did all the other drivers. Ricciardo was the last driver in the leading group to switch to slicks, but there were no tires ready for his pit stop. He lost around nine seconds compared to Hamilton. Although he had driven significantly faster than Hamilton on the previous lap, who braked on the slicks in the Piscine chicane, he fell behind them again. During the pit stop, the Mercedes drivers opted for the Ultrasoft mixture, Ricciardo, Alonso, Sainz and Button for Supersoft . Pérez, Vettel, Hülkenberg and Verstappen drove on the soft mix.

After all the drivers had switched to slicks, Hamilton was in front of Ricciardo, Pérez, Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, Hülkenberg, Sainz, Verstappen and Button. Magnussen crashed into the track barrier in the 32nd lap in the Mirabeau and damaged his front wing, which he then had to change. Pérez drove the fastest lap of the race to date on laps 33 and 34 and caught up with Hamilton by four seconds per lap.

On lap 35, Verstappen slowed down in Massenet and hit the lane. The race management again called for a virtual safety car phase in order to be able to recover the vehicle. In this, Wehrlein drove faster than the specified minimum lap time, for which he received a ten-second penalty and two penalty points.

The race was reopened one lap later. Hamilton cut short in the Nouvelle Chicane , Ricciardo came out of the chicane better and tried to overtake Hamilton on the outside. This stayed on the ideal line, so that Ricciardo got onto the wet part of the track and had to break off the attack. The race stewards investigated the incident, but did not issue a penalty because Hamilton left more than a vehicle's width of space to delimit the course.

In the next few laps, Hamilton pulled away from Ricciardo by several seconds, who subsequently caught up again, and behind him Vettel caught up with Pérez. Behind Alonso, who drove significantly slower than the top four, were Rosberg, Hülkenberg and Sainz a short distance away. Wehrlein received another ten-second penalty and two penalty points for ignoring blue flags.

Pérez pulled away from Vettel again and drove the fastest lap of the race to date. Nasr received a radio message that he should let Ericsson, who was behind him, pass after the Sainte Devote . Ericsson attacked Nasr in the Rascasse and collided with him, and there was another virtual safety car phase. For causing this collision, he received a backward transfer of three starting positions in the next race and two penalty points. Both gave up the race shortly afterwards after a repair stop.

On the 55th lap, Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race and caught up with Pérez again. Rosberg slowed down in front of Nouvelle Chicane Alonso, but cut short so that he had to let Alonso pass again. Meanwhile, Pérez managed to break away from Vettel, but Vettel shortened the gap again shortly afterwards.

In the 68th lap there was another virtual safety car phase for one lap, as a large plastic part was blown onto the start-finish straight.

Hamilton controlled his lead and set the fastest lap of the race on lap 71. At the same time, the first raindrops fell, on the last lap it started to rain again very heavily. In the last few meters before the finish line, Hülkenberg passed Rosberg, who had massive traction problems on the increasingly wet road with his falling ultrasoft tires. In the last lap, Bottas collided with Gutiérrez, and Bottas also received a ten-second penalty and two penalty points.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Ricciardo and Pérez. It was Hamilton's first win since the 2015 US Grand Prix and the first Monaco win since 2008 . Ricciardo stood on the podium for the first time since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix , Pérez since the 2015 Russian Grand Prix . In addition, for the first time since the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, no German driver achieved a podium finish. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Alonso, Hülkenberg, Rosberg, Sainz, Button and Massa, who was the only driver to score points in every race of the season.

Rosberg kept the lead in the overall standings and was now ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
