Reports
background
After the Spanish Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 41 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 51 points ahead of Mark Webber . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 47 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 110 points ahead of Ferrari .
Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds Soft (yellow) and Supersoft (red), as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . The Supersoft tire compound was first used in Monaco.
There was a personnel change at Ferrari in the run-up to the Grand Prix. Aldo Costa , who until then had held the position of technical director, was released from his duties. Pat Fry took over the technical management in the chassis area.
With Michael Schumacher (five times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Jarno Trulli , Hamilton, Jenson Button and Webber (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
The first day of training in Monaco usually took place on Thursday. During the first free practice sessions, Vettel achieved the fastest lap ahead of Alonso and Nico Rosberg . In this training Daniel Ricciardo took over the Toro Rosso from Jaime Alguersuari . Webber only drove three laps during the first practice session; the transmission on his Red Bull got stuck in sixth gear after leaving the pit lane, so that he did not set a lap time. There was a five-minute interruption during training, as repairs were being carried out on the start-finish straight.
In the second free practice, Alonso took the lead from Hamilton and Rosberg.
In the third free practice session on Saturday, Alonso again achieved the fastest lap ahead of Button and Massa. Training had to be interrupted after accidents involving Rosberg and Vitantonio Liuzzi . Both drivers were uninjured.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton posted the fastest lap. The HRT drivers did not take part in qualifying. Liuzzi's vehicle could not be repaired in time after his accident in the third free practice session and a problem with the rear suspension was discovered on Narain Karthikeyan's car . Although they did not qualify, the race stewards allowed them to race. In addition, the Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Jaime Alguersuari did not make the leap into the second segment. In this Hamilton sat again at the front of the field. The Force India and Renault pilots as well as Sébastien Buemi , Kamui Kobayashi and Rubens Barrichello were eliminated.
The final qualifying segment was overshadowed by Sergio Pérez's serious accident . As he left the tunnel, he lost control of his vehicle, turned and hit the side wall of the harbor chicane. Training was interrupted for the rescue of the pilot and repair work on the track. Pérez remained conscious and was taken to a hospital. According to his team, he did not suffer any serious injuries. Pérez is said to have suffered a concussion and a sprain in his thigh. The accident was similar to Karl Wendlinger's accident , who also had a serious accident in 1994 in the Sauber . Wendlinger was in a coma for weeks after this accident.
In the end, Vettel was the first to finish qualifying ahead of Button and Webber. Hamilton, who had set the fastest time in the previous sections, only came in seventh after the restart of qualifying. However, this fastest lap time was canceled because he had shortened the harbor chicane. He fell back to tenth place. Since Pérez did not start the race, he moved up to ninth place.
run
Shortly before the end of the race, there was an accident in which Vitali Petrov needed medical care and the race was interrupted. Vettel finally won the race ahead of Alonso and Button.
