Pat Fry (born March 17, 1964 in England ) is an engineer in Formula 1 .

Professional development

Fry grew up in Shepperton south of London and began studying electrical engineering, but did not complete it. He took a job at Thorn EMI and in his spare time designed innovative suspensions for motorcycles. Fry looked in vain for a job in motorcycle racing and instead went to the Formula 1 team Benetton in 1987 , which had just started developing an active suspension .

Initially, Fry worked there under Pat Symonds in the R&D department and later with the test team during the testing of the active suspension. When John Barnard joined the team as Technical Director, he moved Fry to Godalming to lead the Benetton Advanced Research Group . After Barnard had left the team again, returned Fry in 1991 to the test team and became 1992 race engineer of Martin Brundle .

In 1993 , Fry was brought to McLaren by his former Benetton colleague Giorgio Ascanelli , where he worked again on the active suspension and then as a race engineer. In 1995 he lost his post as race engineer from Mika Häkkinen to David Brown , who had come from Williams , worked temporarily in the development department and returned to the race tracks as an engineer from David Coulthard . In 2002 , Fry became the team's chief engineer, responsible for developing the McLaren MP4-20 for the 2005 season , the McLaren MP4-22 for 2007 and the McLaren MP4-24 for 2009 .

After leaving McLaren in May 2010 after 17 years, Fry took on the position of Deputy Technical Director at Scuderia Ferrari on July 1, 2010 . In December 2014, Ferrari parted ways with Fry. In 2016 he worked with Nikolas Tombazis for Manor Racing . In September 2018, Pat Fry returned to McLaren as Director of Engineering . He is currently on paid vacation. In 2020 he will switch to Renault F1 .
