The 1992 Formula 1 World Championship was the 43rd season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races in the period from March 1, 1992 to November 8, 1992.
The dominant team was Williams , whose drivers won ten of 16 Grand Prix. With five races to go at the Hungarian Grand Prix , Nigel Mansell was world champion for the first and only time in his career. Overall, Mansell set the following records: At the beginning of the season he won five races in a row, 14 times he set the fastest time in qualifying and won a total of nine Grand Prizes. Williams was the fifth time constructors world champion.
Changes in 1992
Racetracks
As in the previous year, 16 world championship races were held. For the first time since 1950 there was no race in the USA . The US Grand Prix was replaced by the South African Grand Prix , which was held for the first time since 1985 . It took place on the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit , which had been significantly rebuilt since the last Formula 1 race in 1985. In 1992, Formula 1 made a guest appearance on each of the five continents with at least one world championship run.
Technical regulations
The technical specifications remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year in 1992. Vehicles with a minimum weight of 505 kg were permitted; on the drive side, naturally aspirated engines with a maximum displacement of 3,500 cm³ and a maximum of twelve cylinders were required. The only major rule change concerned the gasoline: Performance-enhancing additives, which brought a gain of up to 50 hp in the preseason, were almost completely prohibited; the fuel had to be of the same quality as commercially available petrol. At the Hungarian Grand Prix , the FIA carried out extensive controls for the first time. Here 14 of 16 teams violated the guidelines.
tires
The Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli ended its three-year Formula 1 involvement at the end of the previous season. In 1992 all teams received Goodyear tires .
Teams
At the start of the season, 16 teams were registered, three of them stopped racing before the end of the season.
The French team Larrousse had entered into a connection with the sports car manufacturer Venturi before the end of 1991 and entered the 1992 season under the name Venturi Larrousse . However, Venturi gave up its stake in the racing team in late summer 1992 due to economic difficulties. Larrousses new investor, the French Comstock Investment , turned out to be a fraudulent company a few days after the public introduction, which was led by a multiple murderer named Klaus Walz . The Lamborghini- related Modena team , which had not reached a World Championship point in the previous year, did not take part in 1992. Even the name Coloni no longer appeared in Formula 1 after four years. Andrea Sassetti took over some of the components of the racing team and announced his Ancona- based Andrea Moda Formula team as Coloni successors. The FIA did not share this view. Believing that Andrea Moda Formula was a new team, she excluded the racing team, which had not deposited the security fee required for new teams, from the World Championship before the first race of the year. An agreement was later reached, as a result of which Andrea Moda Formula was again admitted to the world championship. After numerous scandals, however, before the Belgian Grand Prix, there was another exclusion based on Art. 166 of the regulations on the grounds that Andrea Moda was likely to discredit Formula 1. In other areas, too, the death of teams that was recorded in 1991 continued. During the year Brabham and Fondmetal ceased operations. Despite major financial difficulties, March held out until the last race of the season, but then also gave up.
Engines
The partnership between McLaren and Honda , which has existed since 1988, ended in 1992 for the time being last year; After the end of the 1992 season, Honda discontinued its factory Formula 1 commitment and left the provision of racing engines to the subsidiary Mugen . It was there as early as 1992 that the customer motors for the Arrows team, which started out as Footwork , were built . There were also a number of new engine partnerships: after the relationship with Honda had only lasted a year, Tyrrell purchased engines from Ilmor for the first time in 1992 , and Brabham switched to Judd engines, while the twelve-cylinder engines from Yamaha used the previous year were now used by Jordan . The Scuderia Italia took over from Minardi the role of the Ferrari customer teams while Minardi twelve-cylinder engines from Lamborghini received.
Technical innovation
In the F92A, Ferrari relied on the promising aerodynamic concept of a double vehicle floor, in which the air flow under the actual chassis was shielded from interaction with the road surface by a floor panel. This development was promising in theory, but turned out to be problematic in practice and was therefore not pursued further after the season.
driver
While the top teams Williams and McLaren left their driver line-up unchanged, Ferrari replaced the previous top driver Alain Prost with Ivan Capelli . At Benetton was Michael Schumacher of top drivers; at his side was the experienced Martin Brundle , who had driven for Brabham last year. This replaced Nelson Piquet , who ended his Formula 1 career after 14 years.
Brabham reported with Giovanna Amati for the first time since 1980 ( Desiré Wilson for Brands Hatch Racing ) a female cockpit line-up again. Amati was replaced in the spring of 1992 after three missed qualifications by the Williams test driver Damon Hill , who made his Formula 1 debut here.
In addition to Amati and Hill, six other drivers were registered for a Formula 1 race for the first time in 1992: Andrea Chiesa (Fondmetal), Paul Belmondo and Emanuele Naspetti (both March), Christian Fittipaldi (Minardi), Ukyō Katayama (Venturi Larrousse) and Perry McCarthy (Andrea Moda). McCarthy and Amati were the only debutants who failed to qualify for a race.
Jan Lammers returned to Formula 1 in autumn 1992 after a ten-year break (March).

The Grand Prix of South Africa at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit took place on March 1, 1992 and went over 72 laps of 4.261 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 306.792 km.
Acclimatization training took place on the Thursday before the race so that the pilots could get to know the circuit, which was unknown to most of them. Because Andrea Moda Formula was excluded from the World Championship after the acclimatization rounds, a pre-qualification was not necessary. In training, Nigel Mansell dominated in the Williams FW14B . He took pole position. Three quarters of a second was faster than second-placed Ayrton Senna and one and a half seconds faster than his team-mate Riccardo Patrese , who came in fourth on the grid.
The race was poor in overtaking maneuvers. Shortly after the start, Patrese managed to overtake both Gerhard Berger and Senna and, together with Mansell, create a double lead for Williams that lasted until the finish line. Mansell won the race without being involved in any duels, ahead of Patrese and Senna.

The Brazilian Grand Prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace took place on April 5, 1992 and went over 71 laps of 4.325 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 307.075 km.
The announcement of Andrea Moda Formula made a pre-qualification necessary for the first time this year. After qualifying, the Williams drivers again took the first two starting positions. Nigel Mansell's lap time was 2.2 seconds below that of third-placed Ayrton Senna .
Mansell didn't get off to a good start in the race, so he had to defend himself against Michael Schumacher and Senna, while his team-mate Riccardo Patrese took the lead. In the course of the race, Patrese and Mansell fought for the top position without being threatened by the following drivers, which ultimately ended in Mansell's favor. There were numerous battles for position between Schumacher and Senna in the chasing field. Senna dropped out with a technical defect, Schumacher took third place again. Ranked fourth and fifth were the Ferrari pilots Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli . Michele Alboreto , who had passed the pre-qualification in footwork , finished in sixth place.

The French Grand Prix at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours took place on July 5, 1992 and covered a distance of 69 laps.
Andrea Moda Formula did not participate, so no pre-qualification was required. In qualifying practice, the two Williams drivers dominated again , who were 1.8 ( Nigel Mansell ) and 1.3 seconds ( Riccardo Patrese ) faster than third-placed Ayrton Senna . It rained on race day. The start was on a wet track and four drivers - including Ayrton Senna - dropped out on the first lap after collisions or driving errors. Riccardo Patrese took over the leadership. Because of increasing rain, the race was interrupted after 18 laps. At the restart, Patrese initially maintained the lead, but after a duel following a stable order, he gave his team-mate Mansell the right of way. Third place went to Benetton driver Martin Brundle , who achieved the first podium finish in his Formula 1 career here.

The Hungarian Grand Prix on the Hungaroring took place on August 16, 1992 and covered a distance of 77 laps.
It was the last race for the financially troubled Brabham team, which for economic reasons only entered with one driver ( Damon Hill ) and which ceased racing the following week after 30 years and 402 Formula 1 races. Regardless of this, a pre-qualification was still necessary, in which, however, only one car had to be eliminated. Perry McCarthy failed in the pre-qualification . Pole position went to Riccardo Patrese , who was faster than his team-mate Nigel Mansell for the first time this year . The victory on the Hungaroring went to Ayrton Senna . The Williams -Pilot Nigel Mansell finished second in the race and was uncatchable in the World Championship after eleven of 16 races for the first time world champion.

The Belgian Grand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps took place on August 30, 1992 and covered a distance of 44 laps.
The Brabham team did not participate in the race. Andrea Moda Formula was excluded from further participation in the world championship after the team boss was arrested in the paddock on suspicion of forging documents. Prequalification was therefore unnecessary. Pole position went to world champion Nigel Mansell , followed by Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher . Ligier driver Érik Comas suffered a serious accident during training, which is why he was unable to take part in the race. The race took place under rainy conditions. The leadership changed several times. Schumacher was the first to switch to slicks when the track dried out. Shortly afterwards he took the lead, which he was able to extend to half a minute in the end thanks to the performance of his tires, but also due to technical defects in the two Williams cars. Schumacher won a Formula 1 race for the first time with the Belgian Grand Prix.

On the occasion of the race, Nigel Mansell announced his retirement from Formula 1 after he had not been able to agree on an extension of his contract with Frank Williams .
The Italian Grand Prix was the last Formula 1 race for the Italian team Fondmetal Corse , which ceased operations the following week for economic reasons. Both Fondmetal drivers were able to qualify, but didn't finish the race. Pole position went to Nigel Mansell, whose best lap was half a second faster than the Ayrton Sennas . Jean Alesi in a Ferrari F92A was in third place . Mansell initially led the race, who suddenly slowed down briefly on lap 20 and was overtaken by team-mate Riccardo Patrese behind him . Mansell later dropped out due to a technical defect. Towards the end the patrese also had a defect. In contrast to Mansell, however, he was at least able to finish the race at a much slower pace. He was overtaken by the eventual winner Ayrton Senna, Martin Brundle , Michael Schumacher and Gerhard Berger .

The Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka International Racing Course took place on October 25, 1992 and covered a distance of 53 laps. The starting grid resulted from the results of Friday training. Since it was raining during Saturday's training, no improvement in lap times was expected compared to the results on Friday, so that only five drivers completed training laps on Saturday. Patrese won the race. It was the sixth and last victory of his Formula 1 career. After Patrese, Gerhard Berger , Martin Brundle , Andrea de Cesaris and Jean Alesi crossed the finish line. Sixth place went to Christian Fittipaldi , who scored the first world championship point of his Formula 1 career here. It was also the first and only point for the Minardi team this season.
