Giovanna Amati

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanna Amati (born July 20, 1962 in Rome ) is a former Italian car racing driver and the last woman to date to have participated in a qualifying for a Formula 1 race.

Career

Giovanna Amati was born in 1962 as the daughter of a wealthy Italian businessman and, as a friend of Elio de Angelis, gained her first experience in motorsport in a racing school. From 1981 to 1984 she participated in Formula Abarth and was able to win several races there. The Italian competed in the Italian Formula 3 for the next two seasons and was also able to achieve respectable results there. In 1987 she was promoted to the European Formula 3000 . Here she was only able to qualify occasionally and until 1991 achieve no championship points, where she contested the 1989 season in the Japanese Formula 3000. Her staying in this motorsport class for years is probably due to her solvency.

Before the start of the 1992 season , Amati was able to gain her first experience in a Formula 1 racing car thanks to her good relationships with Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore . In the same year she was taken on by the financially troubled Brabham team to stabilize it financially. Since she could not achieve competitive lap times and could not qualify for the race as 30th and last in every qualification, she was replaced at the Spanish Grand Prix by the debutant and later world champion Damon Hill .

In 1993 Amati won the women's championship in the European Porsche Supercup and between 1994 and 1996 achieved several podium places in the Ferrari Challenge . In 1998 and 1999 she drove in the FIA's International Sports Racing Series and also took part in various other sports car races.

Today Amati works as a journalist in her home country Italy and works, among other things, on Formula 1 broadcasts for the TV station Rai Uno .
