The 1992 Spanish Grand Prix took place on May 3rd in Montmeló north of Barcelona and was the fourth race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After three failed qualifications in a row, Giovanna Amati was replaced at Brabham by debutant Damon Hill as she could not raise the anticipated sponsorship money that the team badly needed. The 1976 Austrian Grand Prix thus remained the last Formula 1 World Championship round to date (as of the end of 2013), in which a woman, Lella Lombardi, took part.

Perry McCarthy had in the meantime received a super license and was thus able to compete as the second driver alongside Roberto Moreno for Andrea Moda Formula . However, due to a defect, he only completed a few meters in the pre-qualification.

training

For the fourth time in a row, Nigel Mansell secured pole position. His Williams team- mate Riccardo Patrese did not qualify for second place on the grid, as he did on the previous three race weekends, but for fourth behind Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna . Ivan Capelli shared the third row with Martin Brundle . They were followed by Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi .

All the best times were achieved in the first qualifying session on Friday. Due to the rain they could not be undercut in the second round on Saturday.

run

The start took place in wet track conditions, so that most of the drivers started the race on rain tires. Due to the location of his starting point under a bridge, which means that the rear wheels were on a narrow stretch of dry asphalt, Jean Alesi made a very good start, which brought him to third place behind the two Williams drivers before the first corner. Schumacher followed before Senna.

On the seventh lap, Schumacher overtook Alesi, who shortly after fell behind Senna and Berger. After a spin, he was overtaken by his team-mate Capelli and was in seventh place on lap 13.

When the rain got heavier from lap 20, Patrese turned out of bounds. This put Schumacher in second place behind Mansell, who was clearly in the lead. Senna followed before Berger, Capelli and Alesi. By the 59th lap the Frenchman had moved up to fourth place and put Senna under pressure. This then turned out in the 63rd lap. Around the same time, Capelli also fell out of the points.

Nigel Mansell achieved the fourth victory in the fourth race of the season. Michael Schumacher took second place in front of Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger, Michele Alboreto and Pierluigi Martini .
