The 1968 Spanish Grand Prix took place on May 12th at the Circuito del Jarama in San Sebastián de los Reyes , a suburb of Madrid , and was the second race of the 1968 World Championship .

Reports

background

The second World Cup run of the year only took place around five months after the season opener in South Africa .

In March, Bruce McLaren had meanwhile won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch with his new McLaren M7A, which is not part of the world championship . In this race, the Lotus racing cars were no longer competed in the classic British Racing Green , but in the red and white color scheme of the new main sponsor. The team established a trend that spread rapidly in motorsport in the following months.

Three weeks after this race, Jim Clark had a fatal accident during a Formula 2 race at the Hockenheimring . When a few days later another Formula 1 race that was not part of the World Championship took place in Silverstone , Lotus entered with just one car for this reason and Denis Hulme gave the McLaren team another victory. On the same weekend, Jackie Stewart had a serious accident in a Formula 2 race in the Jarama and suffered injuries that forced him to take a month off so that he could not take part in the Spanish Grand Prix.

With Mike Spence , another Formula 1 driver was killed before the second World Championship race. He died on pre-tests for the Indianapolis 500 .

Only 14 cars were eventually entered for the first Spanish Grand Prix since 1954 . As an exception, BRM , Lotus and Matra International only competed with one vehicle each. In return, the private team of the same name founded by Reg Parnell enriched the field by reporting a BRM P126 for Piers Courage . Rob Walker's private team now had a Lotus 49 instead of a Cooper T81 . The Cooper factory team had converted their vehicles from Maserati to BRM engines.

training

Chris Amon was fastest in training in the Ferrari 312F1 for the first time in his Grand Prix career. He shared the three-car front row with Pedro Rodríguez and Denis Hulme. Bruce McLaren and Jean-Pierre Beltoise , who represented Jackie Stewart in the Matra Tyrrell customer team, qualified behind them. Graham Hill only finished sixth on the grid in his favorite Lotus 49.

run

Rodríguez immediately took the lead from Beltoise, Amon and Hulme after the start. This order remained constant until the twelfth lap when Beltoise briefly took the lead. However, four laps later he retired due to an engine problem, leaving Amon, who had overtaken Rodríguez in the meantime, the lead. The New Zealander stayed in the lead for 30 laps. Up to the 28th lap he was constantly harassed by Rodríguez, until Rodríguez lost control of his car and had an accident. This put Hill in second place ahead of Hulme and John Surtees . When Amon's fuel pump failed on lap 58, Hill took the lead and won ahead of Hulme and Brian Redman , making his first and only podium in his second Grand Prix.
