The 1968 Mexican Grand Prix took place in Mexico City on November 3rd and was the twelfth and final race of the 1968 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
Before the last race of the year, three drivers had a chance of winning the world championship. These were Graham Hill , who was leading in the World Cup , defending champion Denis Hulme and Jackie Stewart , who had kept close to the top four weeks earlier with his victory in the US Grand Prix .
The third works Lotus that the team had taken to the overseas races was occupied this weekend by local guest starter Moisés Solana . It was his last Grand Prix participation.
Jacky Ickx returned to the Ferrari cockpit after recovering from a leg injury .
After numerous races with a technically outdated McLaren M5A, Joakim Bonnier reported a Honda 301 for his private team for this race .
training
Jo Siffert secured pole position in his private Lotus 49 ahead of Chris Amon in a Ferrari 312 . The second row was shared by the two World Cup rivals Hill and Hulme. The third title contender Stewart had to be content with seventh place on the grid behind Dan Gurney and John Surtees .
run
The pilots starting from the front row were overtaken by Hill immediately after the start flag fell, who in turn was overtaken by the well-started Surtees before the first corner. However, he regained the lead in the course of the first lap. Meanwhile, Stewart had positioned himself in third place in front of Amon, Hulme, Rodríguez and Rindt .
There were numerous position shifts during the first few laps. Surtees dropped back due to an engine problem and Rindt retired with a defective ignition. A similar problem ended the Ickx race after just two laps.
For a few laps Stewart took the lead in front of Hill and Hulme, which put the three World Cup opponents in the first three positions. However, Hulme fell out of this group of leaders due to a suspension damage, when he was first overtaken by Siffert and finally hit the guard rails on the eleventh lap.
The fight for the world championship had thus developed into a duel between Hill and Stewart, in which Siffert intervened by taking the lead in the 22nd round. A pit stop due to a technical defect, however, threw him back a little later.
Stewart had a big lead over the rest of the field in second, but gradually fell behind due to a problem with the fuel supply and was overtaken by third-placed Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren on lap 51 .
After Brabham and Johnny Servoz-Gavin were eliminated, the second Lotus works driver Jackie Oliver achieved third place behind the new world champion Hill and Bruce McLaren. Stewart ended up seventh.
It was Graham Hill's second world championship win after 1962 and the third constructors' title for Lotus after 1963 and 1965 .
