The 1986 Mexican Grand Prix took place on October 12th at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City . It was the penultimate race of the 1986 season and the first Mexican Grand Prix since 1970 . It ended with the first victory of the Austrian Gerhard Berger .
training
The Brazilian Ayrton Senna took the pole position for the eighth time in the 1986 season , followed by the two Williams drivers and World Cup contenders Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell . Gerhard Berger was in fourth place , Alain Prost - another World Cup contender - started from sixth.
Huub Rothengatter , who qualified for 23rd place on the grid, was unable to take part in the race because he had an accident on the finish curve during practice and his car was irreparably damaged in the process.
run
Nigel Mansell got off to a very bad start and fell back almost to the end of the field. His team-mate Piquet, on the other hand, was able to overtake Senna right after the start and take the lead. Berger, first in third place, was soon overtaken by Prost. These four stayed in a row within a few seconds, while the lead over the other drivers grew. Mansell was able to work his way up in midfield, but the associated tire wear forced him to change tires early.
The tires were also decisive for the outcome of the Grand Prix. Piquet, Senna and Prost drove on Goodyear tires and gradually had to pit in the middle of the race. After Prost in the 30th lap, Piquet changed in the 31st, which put Senna in the lead for a short time. After his pit stop on lap 35, Berger was in the lead, who in contrast to his immediate competitors drove with Pirelli tires and was able to drive through until the end without changing tires. On the other hand, Piquet had major tire problems and was unable to intervene in the decision after a total of three pit stops. Senna fell behind Prost after a second stop. A few laps before the end, Stefan Johansson ( Ferrari ) and Riccardo Patrese ( Brabham ) who were in the points fell out.
Gerhard Berger finally won the Mexican Grand Prix ahead of Prost and Senna. For Berger it was the first of a total of ten wins, and it was also the maiden win for the new Benetton team .
World Championship
In the World Cup, Nigel Mansell was leading the Mexican Grand Prix with 10 points ahead of his teammate Piquet and 11 ahead of Prost. Mansell could have become world champion in Mexico if his two competitors were eliminated or if he had crossed the finish line before you. Mansell's chances of winning the title on his own were already gone after his unsuccessful start. Piquet only kept his World Cup chances through fourth place thanks to a few failures shortly before the end, while Mansell did not help fifth because of the discarded results. Prost, on the other hand, significantly increased his chances of defending his title with second place.
It is worth mentioning a three-way battle between the three title contenders towards the end of the race. However, Prost was only about to lap Piquet, which was already far behind, while Mansell was waiting behind Prost for a chance to overtake his team-mate.
