The 1986 USA Grand Prix took place in Detroit on June 22nd and was the seventh race of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship .

Since no more two races per season were planned in the USA for the foreseeable future, the division into USA East and USA West was dispensed with and the race was only referred to as the US Grand Prix or the Detroit Grand Prix .
Eddie Cheever was hired to replace Patrick Tambay , who had to recover from foot injuries sustained during the warm-up for the Canadian Grand Prix the previous weekend , and thus had the opportunity to attend his home Grand Prix deny.
Christian Danner's move from Osella to Arrows as the successor to Marc Surer , which had already been planned for the Canadian GP, has now been completed. The gap that Danner left at Osella was closed with Canadian Formula 1 debutant Allen Berg .

As three times at the start of the season, Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position in front of the two Williams teammates, with Nigel Mansell this time ahead of Nelson Piquet . René Arnoux finished fourth in the Ligier JS27 ahead of Ferrari driver Stefan Johansson and Jacques Laffite in the second Ligier .

During the first lap, Senna was able to defend its top position, but had to hand it over to Mansell on the second lap due to a shift error. Arnoux followed in front of Piquet and Johansson.
Due to braking problems, Mansell fell behind Senna again on lap eight. Arnoux and Laffite also passed the Briton. They formed a Ligier one-two lead when Senna had to make an unscheduled pit stop on the twelfth lap due to a puncture, which threw him back to eighth place. On lap 18 the lead changed between the two teammates at the top.
During the regular pit stops to change tires, the Ligier mechanics proved to be slower than those of the other teams fighting for victory. Since the Williams mechanics did not make perfect stops either, Senna took the lead again on lap 39 from Piquet. Behind it followed Alain Prost ahead of the two Ligier pilots.
Piquet had an accident on the 42nd lap. Arnoux collided with his car and was eliminated shortly afterwards after a collision with Thierry Boutsen . While Senna was leading by a clear margin, Prost dueled his compatriot Laffite for second place. Handicapped by misfires, the reigning world champion finally had to admit defeat. Michele Alboreto was fourth ahead of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese .
