The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit is an automobile racing event based in Detroit , Michigan , United States . The first race took place in 1982. From 1982 to 1988 it was part of the Formula 1 world championship. It has been in the highest category in American Championship Car Racing since 1989 . It has been part of the IndyCar Series racing calendar since 2007 . It was held on the Detroit Street Circuit until 1991 and has been held on the Raceway at Belle Isle since 1992 . The race was no longer held annually from 2002.

In 2013, at the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit, an IndyCar event was held for the first time with two races over the entire distance on one weekend.

history

The Detroit Grand Prix was first held in 1982 as part of the Formula 1 World Championship. It took place on the Detroit Street Circuit . The event remained on the Formula 1 racing calendar until 1988. There it was called the Grand Prix of the USA East (1982–1985) and the United States Grand Prix (1986–1988).

In 1989 the race changed to the Indy Car World Series . It continued to be held on the Detroit Street Circuit until 1991. In 1992 the event was first held at the Raceway at Belle Isle . Until 2001 it remained in the racing calendar of the Indy Car World Series, which from 1997 was called the CART series.

In 2007 the Grand Prix returned to the racing calendar of an American formula series. This time it was the IndyCar Series that ran on the Raceway at Belle Isle. After two events, however, the Grand Prix fell off the racing calendar. In 2012, the race, now called the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix , was reinstated on the IndyCar Series racing calendar. In 2013, the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit saw two full IndyCar races in one weekend for the first time.
