The Honda Indy Toronto is an automobile race on the Streets of Toronto in Toronto , Ontario , Canada . It has belonged to the highest category in American Championship Car Racing since 1986 and took place annually until 2008. It has been part of the IndyCar Series racing calendar since 2009 .

history

1997 Toronto Molson Indy

The race was first held in 1986 as Molson Indy Toronto as part of the Indy Car World Series . It remained in the racing calendar of this series until 2007, which has since changed its name. In 1996, the Molson Indy Toronto was overshadowed by a serious accident with two deaths. Shortly before the end of the race, Jeff Krosnoff touched Stefan Johansson and André Ribeiro . Krosnoff took off and hit the safety fence. In the accident, some parts flew around. Krosnoff sustained fatal injuries in the accident and track marshal Gary Arvin died after being hit by a part. Other people were injured by the flying parts.

In 2006 the race was renamed the Molson Grand Prix of Toronto to omit the Indy name , which has since been used by the IndyCar Series competing for the Champ Car . One year the race got a new name due to sponsorship with the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto . It was initially the last Toronto race, as the Champ Car stopped racing at the end of the season.

In 2009 the race was added to the IndyCar Series racing calendar under the name Honda Indy Toronto .
