The Firestone 600 is an automobile race in Fort Worth , Texas , United States . It has been in the racing calendar of the IndyCar Series (formerly Indy Racing League ) since 1997 . It is held annually in June at Texas Motor Speedway .
With the Firestone Firehawk 600 ( CART ) and the Chevy 500 (IndyCar Series) there were two more races of the highest category in American Championship Car Racing at Texas Motor Speedway .
history
The 1997 True Value 500 was the first Texan race in American Championship Car Racing since 1979. The race went down in history with one rating error. Billy Boat was waved off as the winner. However, there was a technical problem with the timekeeping, so that Arie Luyendyk , who was actually in the lead, was not considered the winner. Luyendyk had doubts about the official timekeeping and fights broke out in Victory Lane between Luyendyk and AJ Foyt , the team boss of Boat. A day later the USAC confirmed that there was a scoring error and Luyendyk was declared the winner.
The race was renamed several times over the next few years.
In 2011, the Firestone Twin 275s held a one-time event with two consecutive races. The race distance and the championship points for the individual runs have been halved. The starting grid for the first race was determined by qualifying; for the second race, the lot decided on the starting positions. Several drivers criticized this procedure with clear words.
Other ACCR races at Texas Motor Speedway
From 1998 to 2004 there was another race in the IndyCar Series, the Chevy 500, at Texas Motor Speedway . This was traditionally held in autumn. In addition, with the Firestone Firehawk 600 2001 , a race from the CART series should have taken place on this track. The race has not started because almost all pilots after training due to the high g-forces on vertigo had complained.
