Reports
background
After the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 0 points on Marco Andretti and 15 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .
There have been several changes in the field of drivers. Oriol Servià replaced Ryan Briscoe at Panther Racing . Servià was last in action at the Indianapolis 500 for Panther / DRR . Pippa Mann replaced Mike Conway , who had won a race at the previous event, at Dale Coyne Racing . Mann last competed in the Indianapolis 500 for Dale Coyne Racing. The Penske team reduced its driver line-up to two vehicles and did without a third car for AJ Allmendinger .
With Castroneves (twice), Tony Kanaan , Scott Dixon , Dario Franchitti , Will Power and Justin Wilson (once each), six former winners competed in this race.
training
In practice, Andretti was the fastest driver ahead of Kanaan and Power. The training was interrupted three times. Debris on the road was always responsible.
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Power was the fastest, taking the 31st pole position of his career. It was only his second pole position on an oval. Andretti was second, Hunter-Reay third.
Takuma Satō and Tristan Vautier did not set any time. Satō because of a gear change, Vautier because of an engine change. Vautier, Simon Pagenaud and Simona de Silvestro were each moved ten positions back due to an unscheduled engine change. At de Silvestro, the penalty was due to a mistake by the team who did not report damage to the engine from an accident in the previous race.
Final training
In the final practice session, which was held under floodlights after qualifying, Kanaan achieved the fastest lap ahead of James Hinchcliffe and Power.
run
Power lost the lead to Andretti right at the start and was also overtaken by Hunter-Reay. There was an early yellow phase, as the man rolled out with an engine failure and stopped on the track. After the restart, Andretti and Hunter-Reay set the pace. Power fell behind and was soon overtaken by his teammate Castroneves. Power had problems with the tires.
On the 54th lap there was the next yellow phase: Dixon rolled out after his stop on the track with a gearbox defect and stopped. He dropped out. As a result, Power took the lead. Andretti's stop went badly and he lost several positions. After Power had pitted under yellow, Hunter-Reay led the race. Hunter-Reay soon got tire problems and pitted. Andretti took the lead too briefly, but lost it again after his stop. Castroneves finally took the lead on lap 97 and held it uninterrupted until the end of the race.
In the 113th lap, Servià turned and triggered the third and final yellow phase. Castroneves hadn't pitted at the time. After his first stint was 54 laps long, his second stint lasted 61 laps. Unlike some other drivers, he didn't have any problems with the tires over the distance. In the yellow phase, de Silvestro and EJ Viso were given a penalty. De Silvestro had overtaken the pace car and was given a 30-second stop-and-go penalty, at Viso a tire had made itself independent during the pit stop. At the end of the yellow phase, twelve drivers were still in the lead.
Castroneves pulled away from the front and had a lead of around twelve seconds over Power on lap 175 shortly before his pit stop. Kanaan and Andretti were in the positions behind. However, both still needed a yellow phase for their strategy to work. Hunter-Reay was the pursuer who was on the same strategy as Castroneves. He was 15 seconds behind.
While Castroneves dominated the race at the front, Kanaan and Andretti had to pit 30 and 25 laps respectively before the end, as there was no further caution. This gives them something back. With ten laps to go, Castroneves was ahead of Hunter-Reay and Ed Carpenter . Behind them, Kanaan made up ground with fresh tires and passed Carpenter six laps to take third.
Castroneves eventually won the race, earning his first win and the first win for Team Penskes. Behind were Hunter-Reay, Kanaan, Carpenter and Andretti. The first five drivers all drove with Chevrolet engines and were the only ones who remained in the lead lap. Franchitti was the sixth best Honda driver. Power, Josef Newgarden , Hinchcliffe and Viso completed the top 10 . Castroneves won the race for the third time and became the sole record winner of this event.
Castroneves was the only driver who completed the race without handling and tire problems.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged, but Castroneves increased his lead over Andretti and Hunter-Reay.
During the technical inspection of the vehicles after the race, it was found that the diffuser outlet on the Castroneves vehicle did not comply with the regulations. Instead of 7.6 inches, it was 7.575 inches. According to the racing team, Castroneves had no advantage, but rather a disadvantage. Race officials fined Team Penske $ 35,000 . In addition, the vehicle with the number 3 was deducted 15 points in the vehicle ranking. The race result and the drivers' standings remained untouched.
