Rule changes
Sporting changes
In 2013 there were three so-called double header weekends for the first time, with one race each on Saturday and Sunday. In 2011 an event with two races had already taken place in Fort Worth , but these were only half the distance and only half points were awarded. In three of the six races of the Double Header Weekends, which were held on the street circuits in Detroit , Toronto and Houston , the usual starting procedure was also deviated from. Instead of flying starts, three of these races were started with standing starts.
The oval races in Indianapolis , Pocono and Fontana were combined into a Triple Crown . If a driver wins all three races of the Triple Crown, they will receive a $ 1,000,000 award ; if a driver wins two of these three races, he or she will receive a reward of $ 250,000.
The point system was modified for the 2013 season. From 19th place onwards, there were no longer 12 or 10 points as before, but instead one point less each starting from 19th place. So for 19th place there were 11 points, for 20th place there were 10 points, etc. From 25th place onwards, all drivers received five points. In addition, every driver who completed a lead lap received an additional bonus point. In the qualifying sessions of the Indianapolis 500 and the Iowa Corn Indys 250, points were awarded according to a special point system and the bonus point for the pole position was canceled.
Blockade maneuvers in qualifying were punished from the 2013 season with not getting into the further qualifying sections. In the last section, a driver was immediately removed from qualifying for a blocking maneuver.
The free choice of the inside or outside lane for the leader at the start and double file restarts has been abolished. The leader had to start on the inside track from the 2013 season.
The decisive factor for the pit position in 2013 was still the qualification result from the previous race. However, the distinction between the types of routes has been abolished.
At the end of June, the rules for punitive transfers due to premature engine changes were modified. Engine damage during private test drives was no longer sanctioned.
technical changes
The delayed activation and the reset time of the push-to-pass button were abolished for the 2013 season. The push-to-pass button was available to drivers for all races on street circuits in 2013. The system could be activated ten times per race and used in total, depending on the route, 150 or 170 seconds.
Since Lotus, an engine manufacturer, had left the IndyCar Series, there was only one duel between Chevrolet and Honda in 2013 .
The speed in the pit lane has been standardized. Riders were allowed to drive 60 miles per hour on ovals and 50 miles per hour on road courses.
In 2013, the teams were free to choose their fuel quantity at the start. Previously, a tank of 18.5 gallons was required for takeoff.
Teams and drivers
All teams used the DW12 chassis, Dallara aero kits and Firestone tires .
