IndyCar Series 2020
The 2020 NTT IndyCar Series is the 25th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 109th season in American monoposto racing. It was originally scheduled to begin March 15th in St. Petersburg and end on September 20th in Monterey . However, the start of the season was postponed on March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took place in Fort Worth on June 6 .
Changes
Sporting changes
Because of the shorter calendar, no double points are awarded at the season finale.
Drivers who need more than four engines will be transferred again to the starting grid. For every new engine beyond the fourth, a driver is moved back six places on street and city circuits and nine places on ovals. The Indy 500 is an exception. Penalties that should have taken place there will be carried over to the following race. There were penal transfers for engine changes in 2012 and 2013 . In contrast to then, the engine manufacturers can decide for themselves how the 10,000 mile minimum running time is divided between the four engines. Penalties are only expected towards the end of the season.
The remaining push-to-pass time is only updated when crossing the start-finish line and is no longer displayed in real time. The teams used this information to warn their drivers about the use of the system by vehicles driving directly behind or in front of them. This is to prevent defending drivers from trying to prevent an attempt to overtake by push-to-pass.
Another person may work on the vehicle during pit stops. She may only remove the tear-off film from the protective screen. The number of people who are allowed to work on the vehicle during a pit stop increases to seven. The maximum speed is reduced from 50 to 45 mph on short ovals and city and street courses. The 60 mph limit remains on the remaining ovals.
technical changes
On May 24, 2019, IndyCar announced that the vehicles will be equipped with cockpit protection from the 2020 season. The cockpit protection is a combination of a protective screen and a halo . The system was developed jointly by Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Dallara. The system is designed to protect the driver from flying debris. The protective screen is coated with polycarbonate . The titanium halo system is connected to the monocoque at three points .
Serial owner
The Penske Entertainment Corp, a subsidiary of the Penske Corporation of team boss Roger Penske , bought the series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from the previous owner Hulman & Company. The sale was announced on November 4, 2019 and closed in January 2020.
Teams and drivers
23 vehicles and 21 drivers are named for the entire season.
All teams used the Dallara DW12 chassis with the IR-18 aerokit and Firestone tires . The engines provided by Chevrolet and Honda are 2.2 liter V6 twin turbos.
- ↑ Carlin had planned to use a second vehicle with the number 31. Sérgio Sette Câmara and Felipe Nasr shared the vehicle in the preseason test and Nasr would have started at the original season opener in St. Petersburg.
Changes in the teams
On August 9, 2019, McLaren Racing confirmed that the team will be racing in partnership with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The team's new name is "Arrow McLaren SP". Because of poor relationships between McLaren and Honda, the team switched to Chevrolet engines. Originally, Mclaren wanted to work with Andretti Autosport, as it did in 2017 for the Indy 500. But because Honda didn't want to lose Rossi, Hunter-Reay and Herta, they didn't work together.
Meyer Shank Racing will contest the entire season with Andretti Technologies. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports has supported the team for the past two years. Because Michael Shank and Jim Meyer's team wanted to continue using Honda engines, they had to find a new partner.
Harding Steinbrenner Racing was taken over by Andretti Autosport due to financial difficulties. The team will compete as Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Racing this season.
Dayle Coyne Racing will launch a car in collaboration with the Japanese Goh team. The driver will be Alex Palou, who drove for Team Goh in the Super GT series last season .
Citrone / Buhl Autosport will field a car together with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the GMR Grand Prix and the Indy 500.
The newly formed Top Gun Racing team announced on April 24th that they would start a car at the Indy 500. On June 29, it was announced that the team would no longer compete. A start is planned for the Indy 500 in 2021.
Changes in the drivers
Debutants
- Oliver Askew (from the Indy Lights series)
- Dalton Kellet (from the Indy Lights series)
- Alex Palou (drove in the Super GT and Super Formula last year )
- Rinus Veekay (from the Indy Lights series)
Change
James Hinchcliffe was not taken over after Schmidt Peterson Motorsports partnered with McLaren despite a valid contract. He starts three races in Andretti Autosport's fourth car. Marcus Ericsson also left Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and switched to Chip Ganassi Racing. He will start in the vehicle with the number 8.
Conor Daly replaced Ed Jones at Ed Carpenter Racing . Because Daly shares the cockpit with team owner Ed Carpenter , who, like in previous years, only drives the oval races, he starts the remaining oval races for Carlin. There he takes over the vehicle from Max Chilton , who has not competed in oval races since last season except for the Indy 500. The second cockpit at Ed Carpenter Racing will be taken over by rookie Rinus VeeKay from Spencer Pigot . Pigot will start two races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing with Citrone / Buhl Autosport.
Charlie Kimball , who was a part-time pilot with Carlin last year, is taking over the vehicle from Matheus Leist at AJ Foyt . Tony Kanaan is contesting his last season and will only start in the oval races. Sébastien Bourdais ' contract with Dale Coyne Racing was not renewed. Bourdais and Dalton Kellet share the races at AJ Foyt on the street and street circuits. Dale Coynes vehicle with the number 18 is taken over by Santino Ferrucci .
V8 Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin was originally supposed to drive the fourth Penske vehicle at the GMR Grand Prix. However, due to the changes in the dates, he no longer started. Felipe Nasr and Ben Hanley were supposed to start for Carlin and DragonSpeed at the season opener in St. Petersburg.
Racing calendar
The original IndyCar Series racing calendar was unveiled on September 1, 2019 and included 17 races on 16 racetracks. Compared to last year, the ABC Supply 500 on the Pocono Raceway was replaced by the Indy Richmond 300 on the Richmond Raceway . The Richmond Raceway was last on the racing calendar in 2009 .
Several races have been canceled and postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Three days before the first race it was announced that the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg would take place without spectators. One day later on March 13th, IndyCar canceled all events for March and April. This was announced before the first training session began. This would have started the season with the Month of May .
On March 26th, the races in Indianapolis were postponed. The Indianapolis Grand Prix has been postponed to Independence Day. The race takes place the day before the Brickyard 400 . This is the first time that IndyCar and NASCAR are organizing a weekend together. The Indianapolis 500 will take place on August 23, the first time not in May.
On April 6th, IndyCar announced a new calendar for the season. The two races in Detroit have been canceled and three races have been added. Another race will take place on October 3rd on the Indianapolis infield course. There are two races each on the weekends in Newton and Monterey. A month later it was announced that the season start in Fort Worth would take place without spectators and in one day. In addition, the race distance will be shortened from 248 to 200 laps. On May 13th it was confirmed that the season finale will take place on October 25th in St. Petersburg .
On May 21st, the races in Richmond and Toronto were canceled. The event in Elkhart Lake was then moved from June 21st to the Toronto weekend with an additional race on Saturday.
On July 27th, the races in Portland and Monterey were canceled. Because of the increasing number of infections on the US west coast, two races each weekend are being held in Lexington , Madison and Indianapolis .
The races in Lexington on August 8th and 9th have been postponed indefinitely one week in advance. It is planned to catch up on the races on the weekend of September 11th to 13th. The appointment has yet to be approved by the local authorities.
The current racing calendar includes 12 races on 7 racetracks.

Season preparations
There was a two-day test on the Circuit of The Americas on February 11th and 12th . It consisted of four units with a total of twelve hours of driving time. Because it was too cold on the first day to get the tires up to temperature, we mainly drove on the second day. 27 drivers in 25 vehicles took part in the test. The new cockpit protection could be tested by all teams for the first time. Will Power was fastest with a lap time of 1: 46.7603. V8 Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin , who was in an IndyCar for the second time, set the third-best time with a time of 1: 47.2630.

When braking to turn one, Ryan Hunter-Reay came off the track through contact with Will Power and was eliminated. Jack Harvey was also shot by Santino Ferrucci before Turn One . After Power drove him into the car, Graham Rahal lost control of his car on the curb at turn three and retired. In the first lap after the restart, Power turned and triggered another yellow phase. As usual on the ovals, the qualification consisted of two timed rounds. What was new was the double race, which determined the starting positions for the first race on the first lap and those for the second race on the second. Conor Daly , who started from pole position for the first time, prevailed against Josef Newgarden at the start . On lap 14 he lost the lead to him. Takuma Satō , who stopped much earlier than everyone else, took the lead after the first lap of pit stops because he was able to drive significantly faster with the fresh tires. Will Power had an accident on lap 144 because the left front wheel had come off after the pit stop. Simon Pagenaud , who started 23rd and last, had already made up a few positions at the beginning of the race. Due to Power's accident, he completed his second stop under yellow without losing a lap. The restart a few laps later was canceled. Colton Herta didn't notice this in time, took off over Rinus VeeKay's rear wheel and flew a few meters through the air before landing first on the wall. Both were unharmed - VeeKay probably also thanks to the new cockpit protection. In the subsequent restart, the McLaren drivers Patricio O'Ward and Oliver Askew were in the lead ahead of Takuma Satō, Simon Pagenaud and Scott Dixon . However, the two McLaren drivers had to stop again. So Pagenaud took the lead with a good 70 laps to go. In the final laps he successfully defended his place against Dixon. Askew came in third. In the drivers' standings, Dixon was clearly ahead of Pagenaud, O'Ward, Newgarden and Herta.
