Edward "Ed" Jones (born February 12, 1995 in Dubai ) is a racing car driver from the United Arab Emirates . In 2013 he won the European F3 Open . He started in the Indy Lights in 2015 and 2016 and won the drivers' championship in 2016. From 2017 to 2019 he drove in the IndyCar Series . In 2020 he will start for the WRT team in the DTM .

Career

Jones began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 , where he remained active until 2012. He won several junior championships in the United Arab Emirates. In 2011, Jones also made his debut in formula racing . He competed in the InterSteps Championship for Fortec Motorsports . With one win he finished fourth overall. He also made guest starts for Fortec in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the British Formula Renault . As a regular driver, he took part in the winter series of the British Formula Renault and finished the drivers' championship in 15th place. In 2012 Jones stayed with Fortec Motorsports and received a cockpit in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In this he finished 27th overall. In addition, he took part in some races of the northern European Formula Renault for Fortec . He was 20th in the overall ranking. After the end of the season of the two championships, Jones took part in an event of the European F3 Open for the West-Tec F3 team as a guest starter. He came home in second place once.

In 2013, Jones completed races in different series for two teams. He took part in the European F3 Open for the West-Tec F3 team. He won six races and was on the podium a total of ten times. With 256 to 247 points, he prevailed against Sandy Stuvik and won the championship. He became the first Asian champion of the European F3 Open. In addition, Jones competed for the team at two events in the British Formula 3 Championship in the national class. He won this class five times in six races. For Fortec Motorsports, Jones was active in several races in Formula Renault championships in 2013. In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup he finished third in two races and finished the drivers' championship in eleventh place. In the Northern European Formula Renault he was 29. He also completed three guest starts in the European Formula 3 Championship and competed in the Macau Grand Prix . In early 2014 , Jones took part in the Florida Winter Series in North America . Three second places were his best results. Jones then competed for Carlin in the 2014 European Formula 3 Championship . Jones finished second once and third once. Due to an injury, he paused at four events. Jones also made three guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship. He always finished in first place.

In 2015 Jones moved to North America and competed for Carlin in the Indy Lights . He won the first two races in St. Petersburg and also won the third race in Long Beach . In four others he achieved podium placements. He finished the season in third place overall and thus prevailed internally against his teammate Max Chilton . Jones also took part in IndyCar Series test drives for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing . In 2016 , Jones completed his second Indy Lights season for Carlin. He won two races: Birmingham and Indianapolis . He was on the podium in six other races. With 363 to 361 points, he prevailed against Santiago Urrutia and won the championship. For the 2017 season he rose to the IndyCar Series and started for Dale Coyne Racing . As the only newcomer to contest the entire season, he was named Rookie of the Year. He finished the Indianapolis 500 in third place, half a second behind winner Takuma Sato . In the overall standings, he finished 14th. In 2018 he started for Chip Ganassi Racing as a team-mate of Scott Dixon . His best results were two third places on the street circuits in Long Beach and Detroit . In the overall standings, he took 13th place. In 2019 he competed for Ed Carpenter Racing and shared his cockpit with team boss Ed Carpenter , who only competed on the ovals . He started 13 of the 17 races and finished the season in 20th place.

DTM

In the 2020 season he should start for the WRT team in the DTM.

Others

Jones is a citizen of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He mostly competes with a UAE racing license. Sometimes he starts with a British racing license.
